DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The report from the independent investigation into the death of seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt should be delivered early next week in Atlanta, a NASCAR source reported Tuesday.

NASCAR moves toward investigation report

NASCAR commissioned the report, expected to be “the most comprehensive in American motorsports history,” following the accident on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.

Earnhardt was fatally injured when his car struck the outside wall on Daytona International Speedway’s Turn 4.

At an afternoon news conference NASCAR will distribute the report and “the key participants in the investigation will be in attendance.”

At this time, it is unknown if any Winston Cup competitors will attend the conference.
