RCR cancels test at Watkins Glen

LONG POND, Pa. -- Robby Gordon and Richard Childress Racing had a potential winning car last year at Watkins Glen International, but if they're going to repeat that threat in two weeks, they'll have to do it without testing.

• R. Gordon hurt in bike accident

Gordon sprained both ankles Saturday when he overshot a jump at a local motocross park and his bike landed on its chassis. He is scheduled to undergo x-rays Monday morning in North Carolina and his RCR crew chief Kevin Hamlin said the scheduled test at the New York road course was canceled.

"I can't road course test because I can't use my left foot," Gordon said. "We'll get it x-rayed tomorrow and get back after it."

Under the circumstances, Gordon's 25th place finish in Sunday's Pennsylvania 500 was no mean feat. His left ankle, which was injured more severely than the right, was swollen to the size of an orange.

Gordon said he's never had to drive injured in a career that includes off-road racing, sports cars and Indy cars.

"This is the first time I've had to play hurt," he said. "The guys were great. Ron Otto and Kevin Hamlin -- they babied me all weekend. It's an unfortunate situation but we scored some points and it could have been a lot worse.

"It's probably the biggest mistake I've made in a long time in my racing career. We're a team that plays together and we get hurt together. We'd been having a lot of fun but I overshot the landing area on a jump and cased it (landed on the engine casing, not the bike's tires and suspension) and my ankles took all the strain."

The accident occurred at Traxx Motorsports Park at Jack Frost Ski Resort -- a complex about 10 miles from Pocono Raceway -- on Gordon's own motocross bike. He and a number of his teammates had trailered their machines to Pennsylvania.

Gordon, who was immediately evaluated by park physicians after the accident, met with Dr. Jay Golding, RCR team physician, Sunday morning. Gordon used crutches to maneuver Sunday and was visibly in pain when his crewmen lifted him from the car after the race.

"The biggest thing is, I couldn't let my guys down," Gordon said. "If I'm well enough to drive this car I need to be driving it and Richard (Childress, team owner) was cool enough to let me do it. I understand I'm in the wrong for getting hurt, but you've got to have a little in your life, too."

"He did a good job," Hamlin said. "We had a hard time getting the car balanced good for him, I think was our biggest problem. I think when he was sitting in there it wasn't that terrible on him."

Gordon is looking at competing in the coming weekend's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, followed by the Aug. 11 Sirius Satellite Radio at The Glen.
