Home Depot 'concerned' but not leaving Gibbs

CONCORD, N.C. -- The Home Depot is concerned with Tony Stewart's behavior, but the home improvement chain has voiced no intentions of replacing him as driver or leaving Joe Gibbs Racing, JGR president J.D. Gibbs told NASCAR.com on Wednesday.

Recent reports said that Home Depot was so disgruntled with Stewart's latest tirade -- in which he shoved and attempted to kick Gary Mook, and Indianapolis Star freelance photographer, following the Brickyard 400 last Sunday -- that they were contemplating the possibility of removing Stewart from the seat of the No. 20 Pontiac.

Gibbs refuted the speculation.

"There's concern, Home Depot is concerned and they want to look at everything that's going on, but they've never said they're pulling out or want to pull out," Gibbs said.

"We're still having ongoing meetings with them and with Tony and with the guys on the team, just like we have in the past with Tony's other situations."

Sunday's episode, which landed Stewart a $10,000 fine and season-long probation, was just the latest in a string of temper tantrums for Stewart during his three-plus year Winston Cup career.

Home Depot has no intention of pulling its sponsorship, says J.D. Gibbs.
Home Depot has no intention of pulling its sponsorship, says J.D. Gibbs.

Last season, he had to be restrained by teammates after receiving the black flag during the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. During that same incident, he slapped a tape recorder from a reporter's hand and kicked it under a transporter.

He once went after Robby Gordon following a crash during practice at Daytona. Last year, he intentionally spun Jeff Gordon out on pit road at Bristol.

"They want to look at things, for sure," Gibbs said. "But they've never said they're leaving or anything like that."
