BRISTOL, Tenn. -- After seven minor cautions, a restart led to a multi-car wreck -- and the eighth caution -- when the green flag dropped on lap 297. The incident damaged some frontrunners and forced them to pit road.
The lapped No. 19 car of Jeremy Mayfield was lined up inside leader Jeff Gordon. Dale Jarrett, also a lap down in the No. 88 Ford, was lined up behind Mayfield.
As the field roared toward Turn 1, Mayfield swayed a little bit and Jarrett got into the back of him. Mayfield spun to the inside and made contact with Jarrett, who spun back into traffic and to the top of the track.
Collected in the melee were fourth-place Bobby Labonte and fifth-place Jeff Burton. As Jarrett headed up toward the wall, he made slight contact with the No. 2 of Rusty Wallace.
However, Wallace continued on without having to pit like Burton and Labonte.
