Gordon's title hopes take hit with accident

DOVER, Del. -- Jeff Gordon was involved in a wreck on lap 65 of the MBNA All-American Heroes 400 at Dover International Speedway while trying to avoid the spinning car of Todd Bodine.

Gordon's No. 24 Chevrolet spun to the inside of the track after making contact with John Andretti, who was running right behind Bodine. Gordon struck the inside wall, causing damage to the right side of his car.

Gordon re-entered the race on lap 122, 56 laps down. He ultimately took a big hit in the championship chase, finishing 37th and losing 123 points in the standings.

Bodine's Ford did not make contact with the wall.

"Todd Bodine got sideways, don't know if he had help or not," Gordon said. "We shouldn't have been back there anyway. We were struggling, couldn't pass anyone, so we had just hoped to bide our time and get to the end in one piece. It didn't work out that way."
