Wallace, who was 147 points out of first when the day began, is now 172 points behind leader Tony Stewart because his car's rear spoiler was determined to "have an inconsistent thickness" at Talladega Superspeedway.

Wallace was fined 25 Winston Cup points for the violation. In addition, owner Roger Penske was penalized 25 owner's points and crew chief Billy Wilburn was fined $25,000.

All three were cited for "actions detrimental to stock car racing" and "any determination by NASCAR officials that parts and/or equipment used in the event do not conform to NASCAR rules."

Wallace will remain fifth in points, 29 ahead of Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon.

Garage sources said the spoiler was confiscated by NASCAR officials on Friday. Wallace finished 13th in Sunday's EA SPORTS 500.

A $1,000 fine was given to Ben Leslie, crew chief of the No. 6 Ford, for unapproved rear window straps.

Unapproved lower rear coil spring mounts cost crew chiefs Mike Hillman and Thomas Klein $1,000 fines as well.
