Where is Ward Burton going to end up?
Ryan Smithson: Obviously, RCR is the logical choice, and it's going to be very interesting to see how Ward does there. He's never really driven for anyone except Bill Davis Racing, and I think he would do very well in top equipment. I've always rated Ward as one of the most underrated drivers in the series.
Lee Montgomery: If you believe the rumor mill, Richard Childress. But at this point, who really knows? If RCR offers it to him, he better take it, because he won't get anything any better.
Marty Smith: Not Bill Davis Racing. He's been there for nearly eight years and won races, but it seems the time has come for a change. He's obviously disgruntled and if Richard Childress comes calling, he'll most certainly answer. The 30 is a chariot, man.
Ryan Smithson: This is a strange divorce. We haven't heard the whole story. If it happens. Got to throw that disclaimer in.
Lee Montgomery: Whole story? They've run like a three-legged goat.
Ryan Smithson: This is true, Lee, but running poorly never caused them to break up before.
Marty Smith: No, we haven't heard the entire story, but judging by Ward's admittance that things aren't totally peachy is huge. He's always been a steadfast Bill Davis guy.

Lee Montgomery: Ryan, are you insinuating Toyota had something to do with it?
Ryan Smithson: I guess we'll know soon enough.
Lee Montgomery: But maybe you're right. Ward has been fiercely loyal for a long time. He's had chances to leave before and never did.
Ryan Smithson: He's had tons of chances to leave. He put Bill Davis Racing on the map. And vice versa.
Marty Smith: Uh, Smithson. Have you forgotten about a couple guys names Bobby Labonte and Jeff Gordon?
Ryan Smithson: Ward Burton never won a championship, MartDawg. Those guys have. Bobby Labonte and Jeff Gordon never finished in the 30s in the standings.

Lee Montgomery: You just made his point. And didn't even realize it
Marty Smith: So how in the Sam Hill did Ward Burton make Bill Davis, idiot?
Lee Montgomery: Who did Sam Hill drive for?
Marty Smith: Junie Donlavey.
Lee Montgomery: No doubt. Probably finished third in the Rookie of the Year standings one year.
Ryan Smithson: Ward Burton helped Bill Davis Racing by giving him a major asset to build his team with, Marty. Stability's a great thing in NASCAR Winston Cup racing.

Marty Smith: Smithson, please learn to quit while you're ahead.
Ryan Smithson: Geez, what did I say wrong today?
Lee Montgomery: Gordon and Labonte had a little bit with helping BDR, I believe.
Marty Smith: That Ward Burton made Bill Davis Racing.
Ryan Smithson: OK, I'll admit something. I never even got what you're saying until now.
And yes, you are right.
Marty Smith: Unbelievable. No, I take that back. Right on target.
Lee Montgomery: Right over his nappy head.
Marty Smith: I have one eye and I can still see better than Smithson.
Ryan Smithson: You guys really know when to kick a man when he's down. But I don't recall Bobby Labonte or Jeff Gordon winning Winston Cup races for Bill Davis.

Lee Montgomery: You think Park will go to Davis? Park was seen walking around with Gail Davis at Indy, if you like to believe in stuff like that.
Ryan Smithson: Is he going to have a choice? That is the better question.
Lee Montgomery: Unless he wants to go to Morgan-McClure, no.
Ryan Smithson: Which car? They have like seven of them now.
Marty Smith: You got to wonder, Lee. If he goes to Davis, room has to be made. It's either Kenny goes or Wimmer goes, you know?
Lee Montgomery: Davis can't get rid of Wimmer. That guy's too good.
Ryan Smithson: Wimmer's another guy who's been loyal to Davis.
Lee Montgomery: So does that mean Kenny is out?
Ryan Smithson: I don't see Kenny losing his ride before the year is up.
Lee Montgomery: I meant for next year.
 | Fan letter | | Don't you guys ever get tired of Tony Stewart not being man enough to take some questions when he loses a race? I'm really sick of hearing from him when everything goes right, but him running away from having to discuss what happened if something goes wrong. I'll give Dale Jarrett a lot of credit for taking the good with the bad and talking to reporters, like he did yesterday after his accident in the pits. - Tim |

Marty Smith: Me neither, Smithson. Herm the Worm is the man.
Lee Montgomery: But then again, if this happens soon, do Davis and Childress pull the trigger?
Ryan Smithson: You mean a flat trade? Kenny hasn't run well this year, but that is not all that matters. If the sponsor loves him, then there you go. I can say one thing -- Kenny isn't tearing up cars. And that saves about a million bucks a year.
Lee Montgomery: I agree. Kenny brought them to Davis too. Be hard to dump that.
Ryan Smithson: I don't know, Stricklin brought his own sponsor, and he didn't stick around.
Lee Montgomery: Neither did Hills Bros. Though
Ryan Smithson: Good point, Lee.
Who will win at Watkins Glen?
Ryan Smithson: Well, we sure messed up the Tony Stewart prediction last week. But he'll be tough to beat this week, too. You can't keep him down too long.

Lee Montgomery: Well, he had a shot at Indy. I wouldn't bet against him, though. But I'm going to go out on a limb this week. Ron Fellows. The guy is awesome at the Glen.
Marty Smith: I went with the 24 last week and I'm going to do it again. Gordon wins no. 5 at The Glen.
Ryan Smithson: Wins No. 5? He hasn't won four times at Watkins Glen, Marty.
Marty Smith: Yes he has, Smithson. 97, 98, 99, 01.
Ryan Smithson: Wait, you're right.
Marty Smith: Count 'em up there, genius.
Lee Montgomery: Ryan's 0-for-2
Ryan Smithson: Man, bad day here for me.
Ryan Smithson: I am sure Vegas will have 2-1 odds on Fellows.
Marty Smith: I was impressed with the 24 last weekend. They fought back well. Speaking of, those boys on the 17 are absurd. If Matt leaves Watkins Glen with an intact car, this deal is pretty much over.
Lee Montgomery: There's always Bristol, but still ... Kenseth looks unbeatable.
Marty Smith: What about RCR? Can Harvick and Gordon repeat their success at Sonoma? I'd bet they'll both be really strong again.
Lee Montgomery: Of course they can. Momentum is a huge thing in this business, too.
Ryan Smithson: Momentum is the most underrated thing in all of sports. That, and Robbie Reiser.
