Riggs sorry for accident with former Busch leader

DOVER, Del. -- Scott Riggs didn't even want to talk about points Saturday, even though he gained a handful of them and one position and in the NASCAR Busch Series standings.

Instead, Riggs was apologetic. He should have been celebrating a third-place finish in the Stacker 200 at Dover International Speedway.

But he was in no mood. An incident early in the race had dampened his mood. Riggs was racing Busch Series points leader David Green inside the top five when the two got together.

Green spun and slammed the outside wall in Turn 4, and after lengthy repairs, limped to a 31st-place finish. So much for the points lead.

That wasn't what bugged Riggs. He was bummed because he's got a lot of respect for Green, and crashing him isn't the way Riggs wants to race.

"I just hate it for David Green," Riggs said. "He is the best race car driver out here to race against. I hate to get into him. I'd feel a lot different about it if it was anybody else but David. I hate it for David because I sure didn't mean to get into him."

Green, who fell from first to fourth in the points standings, hated it, too, obviously.

"I'm OK, but daggone it, I don't know what's going on with these guys," Green said. "I guess Scott Riggs just pile-drove me. I don't know. There was oil on the track down there, and we about wrecked the run before that. We took off, and he was behind me, and the next thing I knew, I'm turned around backwards. I don't get it."

Stacker 200 race winner Brian Vickers took over the points lead, going up 32 over Riggs and 61 over Ron Hornaday.

"To leave here with the points lead means a lot," Vickers said. "We've still got quite a few races to go and a lot of strong competition, so it's not over yet. But it is nice sitting on top."

Green fell 67 points behind, but points weren't really on his mind, either.

"You want to go out there and you want to drive the guy right to the fence?" Green said. "All these new rules, I guess I better be a gentleman. But that's total bull crap."

Riggs said he touched Green's car "ever so slightly," but that's all it took.

"David was struggling right through the center of the corner," Riggs said. "He bobbled a little bit, and I was right on top of him, and I got into him. It was my fault. Apologies go out to him. I wouldn't have touched anybody on this racetrack, especially David Green."
