DOVER, Del. -- It just goes to show that you never know when Bobby Hamilton might pop into your office to say hello. This week while testing in Lakeland, Fla., Hamilton surprised some of his sponsor's employees by just walking through the door to the Square D office building near the track.
He came bearing postcards and a big smile on his face as people came out of their office to get an autograph from their driver. "I left the office pretty fired up about the people I had just met. It made me feel good to go in there and surprise them like that. I enjoyed getting to know the employees and hope that I can do that again sometime."
Hamilton said there is one quote that he follows throughout his racing journey, whether it be in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series or the Craftsman Truck Series: "It's not what you have, it's what you have right."
Since the driver has finished in the top 10 in the first five races and is the current Craftsman Truck Series points leader, it's safe to say he is well on his way to having things right. "But I won't stop there. There is always so much more out there to do in racing. It's important to get on top and stay there. It's really the only way to even be competitive in this sport."
After driving five races in the Craftsman Truck Series, Hamilton doesn't know if he could be any happier with his decision to drive the No. 4 Square D Dodge this year. He's also become a public relations dream.
He wants to promote the series as much as NASCAR does, so every chance he gets to plug the Craftsman Truck Series he tries to help.
"I'm proud of the fact that we have a series like we have. It's really low maintenance. It's laid back. We have such a versatile amount of drivers.
"There are young ones, rookies, veterans and even full-time Winston Cup Series competitors. We get out there and race each other hard to mix it up. It even could get physical sometimes. I ask the media to please help us promote the truck series.
"Anytime anyone needs me, call and talk to me about what else I can do to help. I'll make up a story for you if I have to. I just want to make this series the best."
