Chaffin's No. 18 Dickies Dodge was the fastest qualifier by a large margin -- .374 second -- over teammate Bill Lester's No. 8 Dodge Motorsports Dodge. Chaffin's average speed -- a track record -- was 166.323 mph, marking the second consecutive year the Bud Pole mark has been lowered.

Lester, the Bud Pole winner at Lowe's Motor Speedway in May, qualified at 164.429. Chaffin's best previous start, second, came on June 21 at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Jon Wood qualified third at 163.999 but will fall to the rear of the field on the start because of his No. 50 Bob Graham For President Ford's engine change following the day's first practice. Ted Musgrave and Bobby Hamilton complete the top five starters, followed by former qualifying record holder (165.812) Jason Leffler, Eric Jones, Chris Horn and Matt Crafton.
