DOVER, Del. -- Despite its broad reach, the NASCAR community is a close-knit group of individuals that are often referred to -- and widely considered as -- family. So when a family member, regardless his or her capacity, suffers a tragedy, others are quick to offer comfort and assistance.

Shawn Parker knew this all too well from past experience, but until now never truly understood the magnitude of it.

In the two weeks since Parker's wife, Tara Howell Parker, was killed in an automobile accident in Greensboro, N.C., the first-year crew chief has been overwhelmed by the concern of his peers.

"Everyone talks about how the NASCAR community is like a family," said Parker, on hand Sunday to lead the No. 88 team and driver Dale Jarrett in the MBNA America 400 at Dover International Speedway. "I can tell you first-hand that is exactly what this is -- family."

Parker has long received comfort from the NASCAR family. Tara, 29, had undergone five open-heart surgeries before receiving a successful transplant in July 2001. She steadily improved and two years later, the couple adopted a son.

So now, more than ever, Shawn Parker will lean on the NASCAR community for comfort.

"The support from the racing community and fans has been overwhelming and comforting," Parker said. "So many people have called, sent cards, e-mails, flowers -- it has just been so humbling.

"I know a lot of people cared about Tara, and are feeling loss. On behalf of our families, I want to thank everyone for sharing in our loss and showing their love and support through this very difficult time."
