Tony Stewart was fourth in Happy Hour, followed by Kenny Wallace in fifth. Bud Pole winner Jeff Gordon was sixth after ranking third in the morning, followed by Ricky Rudd, Johnny Benson, third-place qualifier Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Ryan Newman, who improved from 17th to 10th during the day.
Championship points leader Matt Kenseth qualified 14th Friday, but improved to fourth-best in Saturday's initial practice session. But his car fell off badly in Happy Hour, dropping to 26th. Kenseth's Roush Racing teammate Kurt Busch fell off a bit in the final practice as well, to 12th after posting a top-five time in the morning session.
Bobby Labonte, who improved from 20th to 14th Saturday, is the only driver to have three top-five finishes in the five short-track races run this year. He has also scored more points than any other driver over the last 25 short-track events.
In that span, Labonte has 16 top-10 finishes and an average finish of 11th.
Jeff Burton spun the his Ford in the morning session but managed to keep it off the wall and post the 11th-best time in Happy Hour. Todd Bodine, the lone casualty of Saturday's Happy Hour session, wrecked in Turn 1.
"I went into one and I hit the brake pedal," Bodine explained. "It was there for a split second and then it went to the floor. You've got to have brakes at Martinsville.
"The car went sideways and I gave it some throttle to try to keep it down and out of the wall, but you're going so fast here that momentum is going to carry you straight.
"These corners are so sharp and that's what happened. It's a shame because we made wholesale changes between practices and the car was really, really good right there. I was really happy with it.
"It was still a little tight in the middle, but it was night and day from the first practice. That was only our third lap and we had already posted a decent lap. We'll just start from the back now and do the best we can."
Dale Jarrett, who starts the Subway 500 in 39th position after wrecking during qualifying, improved the backup car only slightly Saturday. He was 42nd in the morning, 38th in Happy Hour.
