Here's something to thing about this the next time you're driving on a smooth road out in the country. Slow down. Turn off the music. Turn off the air conditioning and open the windows. Do you hear anything?
It's amazing how many ominous noises you may not notice inside your well insulated "capsule". The rumble of a faulty tire, the hissing of an exhaust leak, the ticking of a valve, the whirring of a noisy alternator or wheel bearing may tell you your vehicle needs attention. Some of these symptoms may be early warning signs of more serious mechanical trouble.
On a hill or pulling a load, for example, listen for a knocking or pinging sound from the engine. That noise may be caused by bad gas, by incorrect ignition timing or other engine functions out of adjustment. Or it could be an inoperative knock sensor in the emission control system.
Most drivers are not trained or equipped to diagnose these symptoms, but they are the best source of early warning signs. Consequently, says the Car Care Council, these omens are a wake up call to visit a technician. Don't ignore them.
