Did you ever pass a motorist who was changing a flat and wonder what you would do if that were you? Some motorists clear their minds of this worry by belonging to roadside assistance programs, others carry cell phones and bank on being able to contact a friend. But a smart thing to do, according to the Car Care Council, is to be prepared to change your tire yourself.
If you've never put on the spare, a dress rehearsal is a good idea. Change your tire in your own driveway where you feel most comfortable. This little performance will, no doubt bring a few things to your attention. For example, get rid of your trunk junk, the stuff that can make it difficult to locate your spare and tools. Make certain that the spare is properly inflated. Consider carrying a bucket loaded with emergency items such as a flashlight, gloves, flares, etc. Incidentally, the bucket also makes a great place to sit while you're changing the tire.
Sure, you may get lucky and not ever have a flat tire, but if your number comes up, it's nice to be in control of the situation.
