Tire pressure and patterns

Most people don't think of a tire as a tattletale. But according to the Car Care Council, tires will tell on you if they're not receiving proper care. They accomplish this through wear patterns.

When it comes to tire pressure, it pays to be vigilant. That means buying a tire gauge, and using it every week. Do this when you have driven a mile or less and the tires are cool. Your tires' correct pressure can be found in your glove box, on the driver's side door post or on the fuel door.

While checking the pressure, take a look at each tire's tread. If the center of the tire is worn, it's overinflated. Continued overinflation causes premature wear and also increases chances for a blowout.

If the sides or edges of the tire are worn, it's a victim of chronic underinflation. This increases rolling resistance, which reduces fuel economy. Underinflated tires also wear out sooner, are more vulnerable to damage and make the car harder to handle.

So take care of your tires, and they'll repay you in better fuel economy, safety and longevity. For more information on tire care or other repair, maintenance or enhancement information, log on www.carcarecouncil.org.
