FONTANA, Calif. -- California Speedway has a seven-year history of NASCAR Cup racing, but located as it is in the shadow of the powerful Los Angeles media market, it has become a coveted prize.

Since it opened in 1997, California has been the site of some of NASCAR's most compelling displays of racing, from nail-biting fuel mileage runoffs to high speed, multi-groove chess matches.
