Dover International Speedway has a 36-year history in NASCAR Cup racing, and with its position as the second event in the 2004 Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup, its most notable event is Sunday's MBNA America 400. Dover's Sunday afternoon race is the 28th event of the 36-race Nextel Cup season, making it the second race in the 10-event "playoff" series that will determine the first Nextel Cup champion. | | | Mark Martin |

While 10 drivers have a lot more at stake than winning the MBNA America 400, 50 entries were scheduled to try to make the latest statistical mark at Dover. Mark Martin, the most recent Dover Cup winner and Ryan Newman, the defending champion of the MBNA America 400 -- who swept both 2003 Cup races here -- are the ones most likely to add to Dover's statistical legacy. The following numbers refer to Dover, unless otherwise noted. 2 -- The number of times a driver has swept both poles in a season. 4 -- Bill Elliott, Ricky Rudd, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin's leading total of career Cup victories by an active driver. 5 -- Rusty Wallace's leading total of Bud Poles by an active driver. 6 -- Jamie McMurray' consecutive number of top-10 finishes coming into Dover. 9 -- Rick Hendrick's leading number of car owner victories. 9 -- The number of times a driver has swept both Cup races in a season. 11 -- The number of 69 Cup races won from the pole, or 16 percent. 13 -- Dale Jarrett's number of top-10 finishes and DNFs. 24 --- The degree of banking in the corners. 25 -- Modern Era Cup victories by Chevrolet. 26 -- Ricky Rudd's leading number of top-10 finishes by an active driver. 35 -- The pit road speed limit, in miles per hour. Under caution, the pace vehicle will travel 45 mph. 56 -- The number of 69 Cup races won from starting positions inside the top-10, or 81 percent. 132.719 -- Mark Martin's 400-mile race record average speed in miles per hour, set in three hours, 50 seconds in September 1997. 161.522 -- Jeremy Mayfield's Bud Pole Qualifying lap record, in miles per hour, set in 22.288 seconds in June 2004. 1997 -- The year the race format was changed from 500 to 400 miles, in September. 4,966,610 -- Posted awards for the MBNA America 400. |
