Ward Burton: Pocono 500 preview

From Team Press Release June 10, 2004
3:12 PM EDT (1912 GMT)

LONG POND, Pa. -- Ward Burton will make his 336th NASCAR Nextel Cup Series start when the green flag drops for the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway.

"Pocono is definitely one of the more interesting places that we race. It's got the speed of a big oval, but the turns of a road course. It's a thinking course, for sure. You can't just go out there thinking you have the fastest car and win. You have to have power to get down the long straightaways– our Hendrick Engines will be very important to us this weekend – but you have to have a good handling car as well.

"It's another one of these tracks where you have to figure out which corner is most important to you, find a good setup for that one and then work with what you've got everywhere else. I like Pocono, I think the more experience you have there the better off you are. Last year a couple of the young guys won, but if you look back at the results, usually the veterans prevail.

"Tony (Furr, crew chief) has had some good setups here in the past and so have I, so we'll put our heads together and see what we can do with our NetZero Chevrolet this weekend."
