Collectibles Q&A

Are you a die-hard NASCAR fan? If so, you are probably a collector, whether you realize it or not. You may have a shelf or display case brimming with die-cast cars, or binders filled with trading cards, or even a room or garage stocked with memorabilia.

Then again, you may just have a few items stuffed in a drawer. Makes no difference -- you're a collector. And collectors often have questions about the items they've accumulated. Here are our responses to some of your most recent inquiries.

Q: I have a clear 2001 Kevin Harvick clear car that I purchased from a Snap On dealer in 2001. I was offered a $1,000 for it. Should I take the money? -- Tom

A: If it were me, I would take the money and run. In my opinion that car is worth only a fraction of that amount.

Q: I have a Dale Earnhardt No. 3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Taz/No Bull 2000 Monte Carlo limited edition die-cast 1:64 stock car still in the package yet. I was wondering if you could tell me what it is worth. -- Cheryl

A: It would help to know the brand and the series. The value could run from $10-50.

Q: I bought a original Dale Earnhardt Sr. poster. It has the original signature of him and his pit crew on it, not a copy. The poster is from when he was still driving the blue car. I don't know much about NASCAR, but would like to know how much something like that would go for. I paid 100$ for it, it is in very good condition. -- K. Franz

A: It depends entirely on which poster it is, and the description is pretty vague. If it is a "common" Earnhardt poster and the signatures can be verified as authentic, the value is likely $100-150. Some of the rarer posters would be worth more.

Q: I have what I beleive is a very rare poster. This poster was printer by RJ Reynolds to honor Alan Kulwicki after he won the Championship. Alan died before the poster was released to the public. Reynolds decided not to release it in fear that people would think they were profiting from his death. Is all of this true and if so what to you think its value is. -- PJCBOVA

A: Only Winston could verify the story behind this poster. If it's true that it was uncirculated, the value could be $50-100.

Q: I have the 33 years of Nascar Winston Cup championship cars 1:64 scale, all in a wooden case. They start from 1971 Richard Petty car threw 2003 Matt Kenseth car. They all are in Mint condition. How much are they worth today? -- Lacey

A: This is a nice set, but it isn't doing much on the secondary market. I've seen them sell for under $100. Personally, I'd place the collectible value at $125-175.

Q: I have a 1:24 scale Ward Burton Net Zero. I would like to know how much it is worth, not that I am going to sell it. -- Mick

A: Once again, no mention of a manufacturer or series. Hard to appraise. The value could run from $20-100. You have to be more specific.

Q: I have a 1993 Hi-Pro Jeff Gordon 24 KT Gold card. It has a blue and white checkered flag with Young Guns across the flag upper left corner on the front. He is in cowboy gear with hat and lever action rifle. The back is just copy with a patent number 315,364 and 10G in the bottom right corner on the back. Please give a value of some kind. -- Scott

A: This type of gold card is not that highly sought-after anymore. I'd place the value at around $25.

Q: I have a set of unopened 1995 Sun-Drop Dale Earnhardt cards. How much is it worth? -- CJ

A: A neat little promotional set here. They were produced by Pinnacle/Action Packed. I'd place the collectible value of a mint set in the $20-35 range-more to the right collector.

Q: I have a print of Dale Earnhardt that I am trying to find out the value of. It is approximately 31'' X 18''. It has a picture of Dale shown from the waist up wearing a Mac Tools Racing cap and his Goodwrench racing suit to the left of the print and a picture of the No. 3 Goodwench Lumina in the pits on the right. The picture of Dale overlaps the picture of the car. Over Dale's left shoulder, there is a signature of Sam Bass ' 91. In the center of the print, at the bottom, there is the Mac Tools Racing logo. In the lower left corner, in small print, it says, "1991 Mac Tools Inc." In the lower right corner, in small print, it says, "For Promotional use only; not for sale." Any information on this print will be helpful. -- Daryl

A: This is actually a poster, not a print. It is likely worth $25-35.

Q: I am trying to determine the value of a Monogram 1:24 scale Rookie of the year combo model kit featuring the 1985 Thunderbirds of Alan Kulwicki and Ken Schrader. -- Zach

A: A great kit here. It is worth $30-35.
