Collectibles Q&A

NASCAR memoribilia collectors often have questions about the items they've accumulated. Here are our responses to some of your most recent inquiries:

Q: I have a 1993 Racing Champions Alan Kulwicki collectable with card and car enclosed, never opened, like new. I also have a Rusty Wallace Racing Champions car from 1993, also like new. I am wanting to know what these may be worth. -- Bryan Bingham

A: Mint in the package, the Kulwicki car is worth $12-18. The Rusty car is a $5-8 piece.

Q: I have a red tin with a black handle that says MAXX '94 Race Cards, Premier Series. It is still sealed in the original plastic shrink wrap. Can you tell me the value of the tin. I have no idea of how many cards it holds as I did not want to open it and destroy the value if any. Is it of any value? -- Bob

Please remember to be specific when describing a collectible -- manufacturer, year, etc. Limit your questions to two and check our archives before submitting an inquiry.

A: The value of this set leveled off considerably due to the massive production numbers of card sets issued during the mid-1990s. Its value is probably in the $30-40 range at the very best.

Q: I have an uncut sheet of 10 Dale Earnhardt cards from Classic 1995 with a certificate of authenticity. Do you know what its value is? -- Kristie

A: Uncut sheets were also victims of overproduction in the card market. These things used to hold a value starting at around $75 and going up to what anyone was willing to pay. Those days are gone, probably forever. In the case of your cards, the certificate of authenticity sets them apart as a special promotion, rather than a sheet that someone slipped out the back door. I'd place the value at $40-50.

Q: I have a mint condition 1999 Press Pass Signings Harry Gant card, and would like to know the estimated value of this item. From my searches and research, it seems to be a somewhat rare card. Can you help me? -- Jerry

A: Actually, that card isn't rare at all, by Press Pass Signings standards. There were 1450 issued. It's worth $10-15.

Q: I have a 1999 Rusty Wallace Last Lap of the Century 1:24 car. It was made by Revell, and I have seen the same line made by Action. I am wondering what the difference is because I have seen both for sale on eBay. So is my car not as cool as the Action line, or is it the same thing? Do you by chance know how much its worth? -- Mike in Albuquerque

A: Both are cool, but the Revell piece is part of the Revell Select series, and is a lower priced piece than its Action counterpart. It comes in a window box and isn't quite as detailed as the Action car. Your car is worth $20-25.

Q: I have a 1995 Action Packed Jeff Gordon card that is autographed, and I was wondering what it might be worth. The card number in the upper right corner is No. 63. It is autographed across the back. I have had this card for years and it has been in my cedar chest. It is in mint condition. Is it worth anything? -- Jamie Martin

A: This is a common card, worth only a couple of bucks. The real value is in the autograph. If you can authenticate the signature, it makes the card worth around $50, give or take 10 bucks.

Q: I have a Dale Earnhardt 1986 Sports PhotoGraphics card. I also have a Maxx '88 Race Card No. 38 showing the Wrangler car at pit stop and an Action Packed Richard Childress Racing card (says "Borrowing on Talent" on the back) from 1994. Finally, I have a Davey Allison Rookie of the Year card, No. 40, from Maxx Race Cards. All in perfect condition in plastic. Any help regarding value would be greatly appreciated. -- Tonya

A: Tonya, the PhotoGraphics card is an awesome collectible. If it's in mint condition, you're looking at a $200-250 card. The 1988 MAXX Allison and Wrangler car cards are each valued at $10-15 if in perfect shape. The Childress card is pretty common, worth under $3.

Q: I have a Bill Elliott Budweiser No. 11 car mirror made in 1992.I was told it was a promo and was never made available to the public. It was trademarked by Anheuser-Busch. Could you please tell me its value? -- Alexis

A: Here's an item that appeals to several segments of the collecting public: Budweiser collectors, Elliott fans, and NASCAR enthusiasts in general. These mirrors were made primarily to hang in bars, restaurants, etc. Back in '92, some of them sold for fairly big money, $100 or more. Today, I'd say the value has dropped to $25-50.

Q: I was wondering if you had any information on the value of an Action 1:24 scale 24k gold Tony Stewart rookie die-cast. Any info would be appreciated. -- Robert Bell

A: I think you may be referring to the 1999 QVC For Race Fans Only car. Only 2508 were produced. With Stewart just securing his second NASCAR Cup Series championship, look for this car to show a rapid gain in value, probably somewhere in the $250-325 range.

Q: I have a No. 3 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 1:64 scale AC Delco Busch Series car. Can you give me a value? -- Timmy

A: There are several variations of this car, but a reasonable estimate would be around $25, plus or minus five dollars, providing it is mint in the package.
