With Atlanta's tire-eating asphalt, it's possible to make huge gains with a well-handling car, and Martin and Kenseth took little time getting back to the front. Martin said his team misread the pit road speed in their pre-race calculations. "If I've got caught speeding before it was because I was over my speed, but I wasn't over my speed [Sunday], but obviously the red light came on and that meant I was going too fast," said Martin, who finished third. "So we missed that. That was our fault. I had such a good race car for once I wasn't too flipped out about it." The No. 17 crew had five stellar stops Sunday, and was the reason he finished fifth. "We had great stops as always. The car was pretty good and besides the driver speeding down pit road and forgetting to put the right-side window in, everything else went really good," Kenseth said. Busch said he was forced to take evasive action. "It wasn't what we deserved. We were penalized by NASCAR once again," Busch said. "I got run out in the grass so I held my position and they called me for passing [on pit road] so I'm pretty disappointed in that." Busch finished 12th. Quotable "We had a little trouble on pit road and if that hadn't happened we might have had a shot at Carl [Edwards]. We had a tire come back out of the box and so we were fortunate just to be able to come out in the top five." Jeff Gordon, who finished second despite losing spots on pit road during the final stop |
