DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Defending race winner Dale Jarrett drew the lucky number -- er, beer bottle -- and will start from the pole in Saturday night's Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway. Jarrett will be going for his fourth Shootout victory in 10 attempts in the special pole winners' race. He started 15th last year before being pushed to the checkered flag by Dale Earnhardt Jr. | | | Casey Mears |

Greg Biffle, winner of the 2004 Daytona 500 pole, drew the second starting spot from a tub of 20 Budweiser prop bottles, each with a number on them. One by one, the drivers pulled a bottle from the cooler to reveal their starting position. Bill Elliott, driving a Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge for this event, starts third, with Brian Vickers fourth and Ken Schrader -- the last driver to draw -- fifth. Nextel Cup champion Kurt Busch starts sixth, followed by Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart, Ricky Rudd and Jeremy Mayfield. The rest of the field is Jeff Gordon, Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Joe Nemechek, Jimmie Johnson, Casey Mears, Bobby Labonte and Geoffrey Bodine. Bodine, who was originally slotted 15th, didn't show up at Thursday night's draw and was moved to the rear of the field. Nemechek and Mears moved up one spot in the outside row to 16th and 18th, respectively, from where they originally drew. Mears covered his eyes when he drew, grabbing the worst starting spot. "Nobody close your eyes," Mears said. Wallace, starting his final Shootout, was more succinct about his 15th starting spot. "Well, that sucks," Wallace said. Of course, starting deep in the field isn't necessarily a bad thing, for the draft can shuffle cars forward and backward over the 70 laps. The Shootout is comprised of two segments: 20 and 50 laps. Plus, a pit stop will be made during the second segment. |
