How can you motivate young teens to read more? Trevor Oakley of Schenectady, N.Y. thinks he's found the perfect way -- Nextel Cup racing. As the Teen Services Librarian at Guilderland Public Library, Oakley assists middle and high school students with everything from homework assignments to finding new hobbies through the use of books. | | ALSO | |

A long-time fan of NASCAR, Oakley saw his love of racing as a great way to connect with students visiting the library. "Once they see my office decorated with NASCAR-themed pictures and collectibles, they feel more comfortable and talk with me about the sport," said Oakley. His tactic seems to be working. By suggesting books on NASCAR history and biographies, Oakley has gotten many reluctant readers to enjoying reading based on their interest in the sport. His top recommendations to students include "Daytona," by Ed Hinton and "At the Altar of Speed," by Leigh Montville. A fan of speed since childhood, Oakley loves the on-track excitement of Nextel Cup racing. His favorite pastime is sharing the racing excitement with his father, the man who introduced him to NASCAR. |
