Collectibles Q&A

NASCAR memoribilia collectors often have questions about the items they've accumulated. Here are our responses to some of your most recent inquiries:

Q: I have an authentic Mark Martin Kosei pit crew shirt from the 1998 Japan race, also a 1:64 car. I was wondering if you could give me a realistic selling price for these items. The shirt is an original as it was given to me by a family member who was on the team at that time! -- like6car

Please remember to be specific when describing a collectible -- manufacturer, year, etc. Limit your questions to two and check our archives before submitting an inquiry.

A: Two awesome pieces! Let's start with the die-cast. This was a promo piece done by Racing Champions. There were 5000 produced, and it is easily worth $40-55. Now, for the shirt. It is about as rare as they come in the era that includes the last 15 years. Race-used apparel has dropped off a bit in the past few years, but I'd still place the value of that shirt in the $450-650 range. It is a great find!

Q: We have a Goodwrench cap autographed by Dale Earnhardt from the City Chevy in Charlotte in 1989. No certificate of authencity as it was signed by Dale himself in the parts department. Any idea of its value? -- Patti

A: A great autographed item that is bound to appreciate in value. A Certificate of Authenticity would help, but those weren't commonplace in those days, and still aren't when it comes to most autograph sessions and "spur of the moment" signings. It should be worth $125-175, more to the right collector.

Q: I have a Upper Deck Collector's Choice card of Ernie Irvan. It is shaped like a seal, that is silver and reads Ernie Irvan 2-15-1996 Speedweek Event Winner. I just wondering if it is of any value. -- Karen

A: This sounds like the 1997 Collector's Choice Triple Threat card. There were two Irvan cards in this 30-card set. Both are worth $1-3 in mint condition.

Q: I have a Racing Champions No. 22 Ward Burton CAT 1:24 scale replica with exclusive Chase The Race piece of Ward Burton's race - used memorabilia. It has the '01 Dodge Intrepid template and a piece of the actual car, Certificate of Authenticity, in original case and box. Could you give me an appraisal? -- Shannon Claes

A: A neat die-cast here. I'd place the value in the $50-65 range.

Q: I wanted to know the value of two Dale Earnhardt items I have. The first is the Peter Max 1:24 die cast and the other is the Brookfield Coca-Cola Trackside collection with car, trailer and truck in the original box. -- Jim Luksik

A: The standard 2000 Peter Max car should hold a collectible value of $250-300. The 1998 Coke Trackside set is a solid $100-150.

Q: I have a 1991 Pro Set Racing Winston Cup hologram card. Could you give me its approximate value? -- JW

A: Pro Set released 5000 of these cards. The current top value for one in pristine condition would be $20-25.

Q: I have the whole set of 10 Card Dynamics 1992 Limited Edition cards. They are manufactured exclusively for Gant Oil Company, the drivers are Davey Allison,Kyle Petty,Rusty Wallace, Bill Elliot,Mark Martin, Alan Kulwicki, Darrell Waltrip, Harry Gant, Ernie Irvan,Sterling Marlin. They are all in hard plastic cases and they look like they are metal cards. Are these worth anything? -- RSBerry81

A: Back in the days when cards were hot, this was one of the most sought-after sets. In 1992, these cards could be purchased at any one of 28 participating Gant Oil service stations for $6 each. One driver per month was released over a 10-month time span. I'd place the collectible value of a complete set in excellent condition at $200-300.

Q: I have a 24 X 36 inch poster of the inaugural Brickyard 400 race with Bill Elliott's autograph across the hood of the No. 11 Budweiser Ford. Just curious what the value might be. -- At6Yrs

A: A fairly common poster here. I'd place the value at $20-30.

Q: I have a 1993 No. 3 Dale Earnhardt 1:24 scale Racing Champions die-cast. I also have a 1:24 scale 1999 No. 10 Ricky Rudd Racing Champions car. Are these collectible? -- Jennifer

A: Yes, they are. The Rudd car is fairly common and probably worth $10-18. The Earnhardt car is much more valuable. There were three versions, ranging in value from $100 to $150, with a variation carrying a Mom 'n' Pops decal being the most valuable.

Q: We have a 1996 Pinnacle Winston cup trading card of Dale Earnhardt. It's No. 38. On the front it says Black Lightning. How much is it worth?--Richard Carpenter

A: This card depicts Earnhardt's No. 3 Monte Carlo. It is worth $1-2.
