Collectibles Q&A

NASCAR memoribilia collectors often have questions about the items they've accumulated. Here are our responses to some of your most recent inquiries:

Q: My mother was given what was supposed to have been an acrylic No. 8 Dale Jr. candy dish filled with Palmer foil wrapped No. 8 Dale cars. But the actual car inside the box advertising Dale Jr. is a No. 24 acrylic car, with No. 8 cars inside it. She was wondering what is the value of this mistake? The box and inside wrapper are unopened and in perfect condition. -- Steve

Please remember to be specific when describing a collectible -- manufacturer, year, etc. Limit your questions to two and check our archives before submitting an inquiry.

A: The error doesn't add to the value. The collectible value is likely $10-12.

Q: I have a 1996 Uncut Sheet of Knights Quest cards by Wheels. It has 20 of the top drivers on it. I believe it was a redemption prize. Do you know what that might be worth? -- Suzanne

A: Uncut sheets don't have the following they once had, even though yours is one of the better examples. I'd place the collectible value in the $40-60 range, more to the right card shark.

Q: I was wondering if you know what the value of Dave Blaney No. 93 Amoco Racing Champions 1:24 scale die-cast stock car. It is 1 of 1500 with the Certificate of Authenticity comes with metal body template, opening hood and trunk, removable wheels, die-cast pit jack. Also I have a limited edition 1:24 scale 1992 Davey Allison Racing Champions coin bank, 1 of 28000. -- Rick Smith

A: The Blaney piece was made in 2000. It is probably worth around $50. The Allison bank is worth near the same, $50-60.

Q: I have a 1997 ACDelco Chevrolet Monte Carlo black window bank made by Action. However, it is Japanese and says "Suzuka Circuit" on the box. Can you tell me what kind of value this might have? -- Debbie S.

A: A nice collectible honoring one of The Intimidator's trips to Japan. It merits a good appraisal too, somewhere in the $125-150 range.

Q: I have a 1974-75 Racing Pictorial Magazine, with a lot of old photos of Richard Petty and other NASCAR drivers. I wondering if it was worth anything and about how much. I also have a newspaper from the Winston-Salem journal of Richard Petty on Sunday, February 9, 1992 that is about his last lap and was wondering if that was worth anything. -- Kitty

A: In my opinion, Racing Pictorial is the most collectible racing magazine ever published. I think all of the publishers trying to jump on the NASCAR bandwagon are missing the boat by not offering a similar magazine. Your 1974-75 Racing Pictorial Annual is probably worth $25-35. The newspaper is likely worth $5-10.

Q: I have a seven-knife encased collection which is 37 of 750 made. These are Case XX knives and are autographed by Dale Earnhardt. This collection was sold in 1993 after his sixth championship. The frame is solid oak and is also autographed. I would like to know the value of this collection. -- Ellis Cole

A: Ellis, you'd be hard pressed to find a more collectible knife set. I'd place the value in the $1200-1400 range. A super nice set.

Q: I have had two Richard Petty collectibles for many years and would appreciate it if you could give me some idea of their value. One is "Meet Richard Petty", a stereo record in 33-1/3 rpm in a case with the cellophane still intact although it has been opened and played. The case is illustrated with Richard standing beside a 1970 blue No. 43 Superbird. Also printed are "Sounds Of The Racetrack" and "Richard Petty Describing The Action Of Race Car Driving". Included with the record is a 20 page booklet about the Petty family and Petty Enterprises and is copyrighted 1970.

The second item is a 42" X 58" poster which says "Richard Petty" across the top and "5 Time Daytona 500 champ" down the right side. The STP Dodge No. 43 is moving across the bottom. Most of the poster shows the banked racetrack. There is no date on the poster but I believe it would be either 1972 or 1973. -- Carl

A: Carl, those record albums used to turn up fairly regularly. But when the collectibles craze hit in the early '90s, everyone scooped them up. They are a rare find these days-especially one in as good of shape as yours. Personally, I'd place the value at $50-70. The poster should hold a value of $25-30.

Q: I have a showroom pass from May, 1993 that Dale Earnhardt signed. There's a picture of the 1993 Winston Cup Championship/Goodwrench racing team-he signed it on that side, and on the other side are stats. Can you please tell me if it's worth anything? -- Michele Shields

A: A good signed collectible here. The value should be in the $125-175 range-more to the right person.

Q: I have been going through my collection of die-cast and trying to price them. I cannot figure out what the difference is between "Action Racing Collectables" and Action/RCCA. Could you please define the initials RCCA and tell me how I can figure out if that is what I have? -- Melissa Mele

A: RCCA stands for Racing Collectables Club of America. It's an arm of Action Performance (now Motorsports Authentics.) RCCA cars are available through the club and are more detailed and subject to lower production numbers than the Action Racing Collectibles brand. Hence, RCCA cars are worth more. The packaging will clearly state which version you have.

Q: I have a 1996 Dale Earnhardt collectible. It is a 1:64 scale of the Atlanta Olympic car raced at Charlotte on May 18, 1996. What is it worth? -- BEH

A: The Revell retail version is worth $10-15. The Revell Collection car is probably worth $25-30.
