10 Questions: Menard

Paul Menard, son of Midwest business tycoon John Menard, will tackle his most ambitious effort to date in 2007 when he attempts the full Nextel Cup schedule in the No. 15 Chevrolet fielded by Dale Earnhardt Inc., while also competing part-time in a DEI Busch Series car.

Menard took a break during the Busch Series banquet festivities at Walt Disney World to answer 10 questions not necessarily connected to his racing career.

1. What is your least favorite household chore?

Menard: It's mowing the lawn, but luckily my girlfriend, Jenn, enjoys it, so I don't have to worry about that, any more.

No hot rod yard equipment for me. I've got an old McCullough, five-horse motor that I got for 80 bucks at Wal-Mart. It was pretty cheap, but it gets me by -- it gets the job done.

2. Which athlete outside of racing do you most admire?

Menard: You'd have to admire Lance Armstrong, for everything he went through. There are a lot of people who have gone through some difficulties, but I think Lance is probably the most famous for all that, and you've got to respect him for what he's done.

3. If you could go back in time, what period in history would you like to live in, and why?

Menard: I think the Wild West would be pretty cool, like, the 1800s -- like, 1860, '70s and '80s. I'd like to just hang out in places like Dodge City and things like that.

I'd have to see what kind of situation I'd be brought into to determine if I'd be a lawman or an outlaw. But I think it would be real interesting, because it's not a really well documented part of history, I don't think.

So to go see it firsthand would be cool.

4. What is "must see TV" for you? And what are your favorite recent movie, and your favorite all-time flick?

Menard: I really like Grey's Anatomy and I try to follow that every week. But a lot of times we miss it, for one reason or another.

So I've got my DVR set for every CSI: Las Vegas. If there's going to be a CSI on TV, it records it and I breeze through 'em at night, because that's real interesting -- real easy to just get lost in watching it.

MOST POPULAR

A movie I can watch over and over again is Boondock Saints. It came out in like, 1997 or something like that. It's a good drama, with some hidden meaning in it. My favorite recent movie, I went to see that Borat movie a couple of weeks ago, and I laughed a lot at that. I had tears rolling down my face.

5. Other than racing, what's your favorite outdoor activity?

Menard: I love dirt biking, just going up in the mountains and spending a few hours on a dirt bike. Either that, or I like hanging out on the lake, fishing or wakeboarding or something like that.

I've just got one dirt bike. It's a Kawasaki KX-250 and it's awesome. I've ridden quite a bit back home in Wisconsin, where it's pretty flat -- but I just really enjoy the mountains [in North Carolina].

We go up to Brushy Mountain [near Taylorsville, N.C.] and Brown Mountain [in Burke County], up north of Hickory, and there are awesome trails there. I think there are 30 or 40 miles of trails that you can ride on, and after of 20 of those miles, you're done.

A lot of guys on our team actually have bikes, my buddy Peanut Butter that does the shocks on our car, and Nate and Al -- we all try to go up on Sunday afternoons and hang out. Carl Edwards and I have gone a few times.

It's a good time. You just get a group of guys together and just go and hang out.

6. What's the most embarrassing moment you'll own up to, either in, or out of racing?

Menard: That's a tough one, because I'm a pretty quiet guy, so I try not to get myself into embarrassing situations. I'll have to get back to you on that one.

7. You got an iPod, and what's on that bad boy?

Menard: I do. It's got a lot of rock and roll on there. I love, like, Black Label Society -- they've got some new albums that have come out. Just anything that has good, solid, heavy guitar riffs and kinda mean sounding vocals.

I've got like, 1,200 songs on there.

8. What's your biggest vice, or your biggest guilty pleasure?

Menard: I guess it would be not getting up in the morning. I love to sleep. I hate going to sleep at night, but once I'm there, I hate waking up in the morning, if you know what I mean?

I'm trying to wean myself out of it, though. My girlfriend is going to work at 7 o'clock every morning, so I'm trying to get up with her, now. I guess it's situational, because wakeup call comes pretty early on some of those race weekends.

I guess it's just a matter of better time management.

9. If you could trade places with anybody, for a day, who would it be, and why?

Menard: I've got no reason to trade places with anybody. I'm pretty happy being who I am and being where I am, so I've got no desire to even imagine it.

What's the best part about being Paul Menard? Just getting to travel around and see new things and meet new people and to do cool things that most people don't get a chance to do.

10. What have you learned about yourself in the last year?

Menard: You got the tough questions, don't you? I guess I've learned that there's more to life than racing, but not much more.
