CONCORD, N.C. -- Jeremy Mayfield's Nextel Cup team likely will be penalized by NASCAR on Wednesday for failing inspection following Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Mayfield's car came in under the maximum height allowed by NASCAR, series director John Darby said.

Such violations in the recent past have resulted in fines of $25,000 to $35,000. Chad Knaus, Jimmie Johnson's crew chief, was fined $35,000 for a similar violation last season.

Mayfield finished 15th, his second-best finish of the season, after starting second. Evernham Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne won the race.
