10 Questions: Harvick

In 2006, Kevin Harvick's been on a roll that not coincidentally takes him back five years in his NASCAR career to 2001, when he scored two prestigious awards: The Busch Series' championship and Cup rookie of the year.

As the Nextel Cup Series heads to Indianapolis for the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, Harvick is once again running both series full time -- for the first time since 2001.

He's fifth in the Cup standings and in line to make his first Chase; and he leads the Busch Series' standings by a whopping 318 points.

Harvick took a break from his busy schedule recently to answer 10 questions not necessarily connected to his racing career.

1. What's at the bottom of your "Honey Do" list?

Harvick: See, I'm a renter right now -- I don't even own a house. On account of that, I don't have too deep of a "Honey Do" list.

My list is really not much, other than feed the dogs.

2. What's your favorite outdoor activity, other than racing?

Harvick: I enjoy shooting skeet. That's probably something that I like very much that I don't get to do very much, because I don't get home to do it.

[Ron] Hornaday and I got bored one day, oh, probably back in 1999. We went over to [Dale] Earnhardt's and I didn't have a shotgun -- had never even shot a gun at that time.

That was how I started. He sent one of the guys that shot for Remington at the time to show us how to load the gun and shoot the gun and to teach us the things that we needed to do to have fun with it.

That was how I got started.

3. If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be?

Harvick: Oh, the president. The first thing I would do is drop a bomb and clean the place out, over in Iraq.

Instead of making everybody suffer through everything we go through, I'd just wipe it out and be done with it.

4. What is the most embarrassing moment you'll own up to, either in or out of racing?

Harvick: There have been a few of them, so I don't know. But I think the most recent one was probably waking up in the morning, to Tony Stewart, as I'm taking a shower.

That wasn't embarrassing, but that was probably one of the most uneasy feelings. I get done washing my hair and turn the shower off and turn around and he's standing there watching me take a shower.

So that wasn't the most pleasant thing, but he thought it was pretty entertaining, I guess. That was [at New Hampshire], a year ago.

5. If you could go back in time, in what period in history would you like to live?

Harvick: I think if I could go back in time I'd probably want to live in the '50s. I know that's not that far back, but that was when the evolution of the cars kinda started to take off.

You had the big '55 Chevys and all the other big cars -- really all the hot rods and everything started taking off. I'm kind of a big car person, so I'd have to say, for me, it would be back in the '50s.

I like having all that metal they had in cars back then, around me, I guess.

6. Which athlete outside of racing do you most admire?

Harvick: I grew up a big Joe Montana fan. I think he did a lot. I think, as I grew up, outside of racing he was probably the guy I paid the most attention to.

He did everything he could do in his sport. I grew up a 49ers fan -- I'm still a 49ers fan though I haven't had a lot to root for since they've all been gone, but it was good at one time.

7. What's your favorite recent movie?

Harvick: My favorite recent movie -- and I know a lot of people probably think it was dumb -- but Napoleon Dynamite makes you laugh every time you watch it.

ORDER NOW

You have to watch it three or four times to figure out what's going on and it's probably not the most thoughtful movie -- but it's entertaining. It's dumb entertainment, and that's what it's all about.

8. What's your favorite all-time flick?

Harvick: Probably my favorite all-time movie I'd say would have to be Hoosiers or one of those sports movies. I enjoy sports movies and stuff like that -- just watching them over and over.

9. What is one thing your fans don't know about you, that you'd like to tell them?

Harvick: I'd say that most of my fans know that I'm pretty laid back, away from the racetrack, but I'd say that's probably the biggest misperception of myself.

Away from the racetrack people think you're the same person that you are here -- intense and taking everything that you do really serious -- which you have to. But away from the racetrack I'm pretty laid back and easygoing -- I just kind of go with the flow.

10. What have you learned about yourself in the last year?

Harvick: I think just kind of taking things as they come and not putting a lot of pressure on yourself to try to make things happen that aren't going to happen.

I've learned to just take one day at a time and to be more patient with a lot of things. That helps you to go through everyday life a little bit easier, just knowing that you need to be patient with things and to not get completely twisted out of shape about everything.
