10 Questions: Kenseth

Matt Kenseth is in a great position to win his second championship in NASCAR's premier division, to follow up the final Cup title that he won in 2003.

But despite keeping his head in the game while competing in the Chase for the Nextel Cup and the Busch Series for Roush Racing, on consecutive weekends at Dover and Kansas Speedway, Kenseth remains "just Matt" to his fans and the media.

Kenseth stepped aside recently to answer 10 questions not necessarily connected to his racing career.

1. What's at the bottom of your "honey do" list?

Kenseth: The bottom of it? That's a really good question. Katie doesn't make me do very much, actually. So I don't really like doing anything around the house, to be honest with you.

How do I get off so easy? She has her dad come down and visit about four times a year and he pretty much does it all.

2. What are your favorite recent movie and your favorite all-time flick?

Kenseth: My favorite recent movie is Walk the Line. I thought that was awesome. That was a pretty cool movie, and I really like watching movies like that -- about what it took for someone to make it big.

So I thought that was really cool. And I wasn't a Johnny Cash fan at all before I saw that. I never listened to him or even knew a song that he sang before I watched the movie. So I really love that movie.

And what's my all-time favorite? It's hard to say, but Fletch is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's just stupid-funny and I like that. I can watch it over and over.

3. What is the most embarrassing moment you'll own up to, either in or out of racing?

Kenseth: Owww. The one I think of right now offhand is probably here -- because we're at Dover and I just saw it on the big screen, the Nextel Vision.

It was the time I was trying to get on pit road in the car and I ended up on top of the tires like a monster truck. So that's the one that's at the top of my mind right now.

4. Which athlete outside of racing do you most admire?

Kenseth: Yeah, you're right -- it's probably Brett Favre, you know, because I think he's a great athlete. He's totally, naturally gifted. I bet he works at it pretty hard, but I don't think he has to -- he's so good.

And it's because he loves the game so much. I love watching great athletes who appreciate the heritage and the history of whatever sport they're in and love the game.

You can just tell when he scores a touchdown -- he's dancing around like a little kid and you can just tell that he loves the game.

I would think that that's why he came back for another year -- but only he knows that.

5. What is "must-see TV" for you?

Kenseth: I don't watch any shows on TV regularly, to be honest with you. All I really watch, I like to watch movies and sometimes I watch replays of the races, or maybe Victory Lane, a little bit on SPEED when I get home -- just to see the highlights of what happened that I didn't see.

And during the winter I watch football games. I watch the Green Bay Packers and I watch a little bit of the NFL Network. All in all it's probably a good thing not to be locked into watching anything.

I just haven't really got hooked on anything lately, so I haven't gotten into the routine of watching anything. When I was a kid I always watched Happy Days and all that kind of stuff when I was a little kid.

But now I just haven't gotten into a routine of watching any normal shows.

6. If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be, and why?

Kenseth: Really, I probably wouldn't want to switch with anybody. But if I could just do it for a day, I'd want to trade places with Brett Favre, maybe -- but maybe not this year because he gets beat up too badly with the offensive line that we've got.

But maybe 10 years ago, when they were winning all the games and going to the Super Bowl and stuff, I would have loved to do that.

And another one, maybe 10 years ago -- or even 15 years ago now that I'm getting older -- would be to trade places for a week or two with James Hetfield, the lead singer for Metallica.

I think that would be a pretty cool thing to be in front of all those screaming fans and to be out there putting on a show. I think that would be awesome.

7. What was your first job and your most vivid memory of it?

Kenseth: That's a tough question. When I was a little kid I used to deliver furniture with my dad and he paid me a little bit to help him to deliver furniture.

Probably my biggest memory of that was when you'd carry a couch or a chair into a customer's house, he always made me put my hand around the edge of the furniture -- so if anything was going to hit the door, you were going to skin your knuckles.

You weren't going to mess up their door or the furniture, so that was probably my biggest memory of that. I was probably in fourth or fifth grade when he had me do that.

Was I a big kid? Naw -- they weren't that heavy. Maybe I was a little older than that.

8. What would you consider to be your biggest vice?

Kenseth: Man, I don't know. That's a good question, too -- you're catching me off guard with all of these. Biggest vice? I don't know about that -- you'd have to ask my wife.

I think I've got a lot of them, if you ask her. So I don't know what my biggest one is.

9. If you could go back in time, what period in history would you like to live in, and why?

Kenseth: Hmm. That's a tough one, too -- but I like watching a lot of the old races, not super old, but the late '80s and stuff, when the cars still had big bodies on them.

But I think it would be the late '70s or early '80s -- or maybe even a little bit before that, the muscle car era when racing used to be with something that was a little bit more of a stock car and all that stuff.

I think it would be cool to be a part of that and to go to some of the old tracks like Riverside and stuff, and to check that out.

10. What have you learned about yourself in the last year?

Kenseth: I don't know, but one lesson I try to keep teaching myself is to maybe have more fun. It would be to maybe try to relax a little bit and to have more fun -- because you never know how long you're going to be around.

If you ever had a chance to do all this again, it would probably be just to sit down and realize how fortunate we are to be able to be a part of this sport and to try to enjoy it more.

That's hard for me to do because we're always trying to do better and always trying to figure out what we're doing wrong. You just get so caught up in it sometimes that you don't always enjoy yourself.
