Spark plug maintenance nothing to worry about

Spark plugs have to deliver a high-voltage spark with split-second timing, thousands of times a minute, under extremely varying operating conditions.

One of the most economic ways to help maintain an efficient, powerful engine and avoid wasting fuel is to change spark plugs at regular intervals.

As spark plug electrodes wear, the voltage required to jump the gap increases. Under hard acceleration, high speeds or heavy loads, misfires can occur and hence, waste fuel. Also, a rich fuel mixture can foul the ceramic insulator on the spark-plug tip.

So, take the time to ensure proper spark-plug maintenance by following these tips:

• Change all spark plugs simultaneously.

• Be sure the engine is cool before beginning spark plug replacement.

• Gather all essential tools and products needed for the change, including replacement spark plugs and mechanics gloves.

• After final assembly, look to make sure all wires are properly routed. They should not be lying on the hot manifold or in the way of other objects that can cause damage.

• When looking for the right spark plugs, it's best to choose a product that provides better overall ignitability and durability.
