Travel Log: Talladega

Type in "things to do in Talladega, Ala.," and one Web site offers a list of 13 attractions. The top two are Talladega Superspeedway.

To say this part of the country isn't 100 percent about racing could be false. But to say that's the only thing going on in this part of Alabama -- especially this time of year -- would be even more untrue.

Outdoor adventure is still alive with the weekend forecast looking good. The local flavor is dripping with history and a touch of dried grapes. And if one wants to celebrate racing heroes, he can do just that as a way to fill the time away from the track yet keep that racing theme going.

Talladega National Forest -- Boating, camping, hiking, fishing and picnicking -- it's all at Talladega National Forest. Bryant Vineyard -- The land has been in the family since the late 1800s, and for more than 40 years the vines of that land have produced a dream for one family. Bryan Vineyard is a unique stop for an Alabama visitor, offering a taste of the South.

Talladega-Texaco Walk of Fame -- This was a stop on the April visit to Alabama, but this time visitors can honor two former champions. Matt Kenseth and Terry Labonte were voted by the fans to be inducted into the Talladega-Texaco Walk of Fame. Both drivers will be honored on Saturday.

MUST-VISIT RESTAURANT
Glory Days -- Just reading the restaurant's name makes you sing Bruce Springsteen's song, doesn't it? That's just one reason to visit. And what kind of restaurant has a MySpace page? Glory Days does. According to advertisement, it offers the "best wings around, seafood buckets and a ribeye that will make you go slap your mama." Tough to beat in Alabama.
