Convo: Nicole Lunders (cont'd)
Q: That's right. You've made your own mark in NASCAR with the Greg Biffle Foundation. Talk about that.
Lunders: It was founded in 2005 and we are actually looking for a director right now. The pet calendar, where the drivers are photographed with their pets, was my first big idea. Then when Hurricane Katrina hit, I lay in bed bawling my head off thinking about all the animals left behind. So at the next race in California I went around and collected a bunch of items from drivers in the garage for an online auction; helmets, uniforms, gloves ...
We raised $50,000 in about two weeks from the auction to donate to the rescue efforts and shelters. Then Greg and I went to some of the shelters in New Orleans. It felt great to see how much our effort was appreciated. They needed so much help.
Now I'm working on the 2008 Pet Calendar to be out in July and we also have a pet board game in the works. Little Foster will be a game piece, ha! The calendars have done really well. They are the No. 1 seller on NASCAR.COM. (Superstore)
Q: You became quite the newsmaker last season when a tiff ensued with you and Eva Busch after Greg and Kurt Busch wrecked in April. Is that water under the pit box?
Lunders: She and I are good friends now. She understands that I was scared and it was a heat of the moment thing. I just let her know that [Kurt Busch] could have really hurt Greg. I didn't say anything bad to her.
That's they guy I love. We are all human out here, we're not robots.
Q: So before you met Greg, you had planned to be a school teacher. Now you travel the NASCAR circuit 36 weekends a year and live in a motor home. What's that like?
Lunders: I'm lucky enough to be able to go to work with Greg. Other women in professional sports like the NFL and baseball can't necessarily do that. If I didn't travel with him, I'd never see him. During the week he's busy at the shop, he has testing and sponsor events.
I have a lot of support out here and see the same people every weekend. I've made a lot of great friends and we are all like family. Katie Kenseth, Matt's wife, is a great friend. She really took care of me when I got here. She and I spend a lot of time together going back and forth between our motor homes. She's a bridesmaid in our wedding. And during the races, all of the wives and girlfriends always text each other throughout the race, it helps the time go a little faster.
I also do my Pilates in the motor home. I put my mat down, turn on the video and lock the door, ha! Pilates has some pretty strange positions.
Q: What does the future hold for the future Mrs. Greg Biffle?
Lunders: Well I'm going to continue to create awareness for animals in need, we are building a house and maybe in a couple of years we will have some two-legged kids, not the four-legged kind!
