DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Qualifying times for Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne were disallowed following Sunday's Bud Pole Qualifying at Daytona International Speedway after the two cars were found to have "unapproved aerodynamic devices."
NASCAR vice president of corporate communications Jim Hunter said the No. 17 Ford and No. 9 Dodge would be placed at the back of Thursday's second Gatorade Duel. In addition, Hunter said NASCAR will consider the possibility of future fines, suspensions and penalties against the two teams for the rulebook violation.
Hunter said both cars had "holes in places were they would normally be sealed and these were not." Kenseth's was reportedly in a wheel well. Hunter did not specify the location of the holes in Kahne's car.
Last year, Jimmie Johnson and Terry Labonte had their qualifying runs thrown out after failing inspection.
"Our inspection process is getting better every year," Hunter said. "We are committed to trying to stop all games being played."
Life begins at 72
Septuagenarian James Hylton was wandering through the garage area Sunday morning, an unlit cigar in one hand and a cellphone in the other.
At 179.637 mph, the 72-year-old driver was slower than everyone but Mike Wallace, but still enjoyed the experience.
"Didn't hit nothin'," Hylton said. "That was great, it felt real good."
Ed Beimfohr, vice president of marketing for Retirement Living TV, said Hylton's not just doing this as a publicity stunt.
"He is totally into this, he is completely focused on this," Beimfohr said. "He's feeling great. He is confident. He is so ready. The question really is, is the car up to it?"
Getting the AAA discount?
The No. 6 Ford hauler has a picture of David Ragan holding his AAA card, which shows he's been a member since 2003.
The No. 9 and No. 19 Dodge haulers not only feature the current Charger, but the Avenger car of tomorrow in full race trim.
Blast from the past
Spotted on International Speedway Boulevard on Sunday morning: A car decked out in Bobby Allison's white and gold No. 12 Miller High Life Buick paint scheme and a spitting image of Richard Petty's No. 43, complete with STP decals.
And you thought $3 a gallon was high
The pumps at the Sunoco refueling station in the garage area were set at $6 per gallon Sunday, so for example, when Ricky Rudd's No. 88 Ford was filled up, the total showed $60.
However, NASCAR officials say there is no charge to the teams for fuel, according to the contract the organization has with Sunoco.
