AVONDALE, Ariz. -- There are many things close to Ward Burton's heart -- family, conservation efforts, racing. But this weekend it's Virginia Tech.

News of the more than 30 students and employees killed on the Virginia Tech campus prompted the Virginia-based team to swap its traditional paint scheme for the VT logo on the hood of Burton's No. 4 Chevrolet this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway.
Burton's Morgan-McClure Motorsports team is the only one at the Nextel Cup level based out of Virginia, and owner Larry McClure had a vital role in getting permission to use the logo.
To further demonstrate his Virginia pride, Burton will visit the campus on Monday to offer his condolences and support to the university's students and staff.
"I just think it's important to give back to things you're passionate about, and Virginia Tech is one of them," Burton said. "This institution touches the lives of so many; it's a big part of who we are."
Burton will start 35th in Saturday night's Subway Fresh Fit 500, his third race of the season.
As for his paint scheme, plans to change the hood of his car began Tuesday after the team received permission from Virginia Tech officials.
It was no easy feat, Burton added.
"We worked on it for about 14 hours before we got the right to use the logo," Burton said, "and then got the green light Wednesday."
