Juan Montoya heads to Chicagoland Speedway for the first time in his career this weekend. But he has raced in Chicago.
The former open-wheel star has raced two CART races at Chicago Motor Speedway (1999 and 2000), winning the 1999 event. But Chicagoland is a different track and stock cars are a different animal.
Montoya is coming off a 32nd-place finish at Daytona last week, scarred by a late-race accident with Bobby Labonte that gave the No. 42 Dodge some damage.
Chicagoland may be the medicine to cure that hangover. Intermediate tracks are where Montoya has thrived in Nextel Cup, save his road-course victory. His 22.6 average finish at tracks between 1-2 miles in length is better than superspeedways (28.5) or short tracks (25.6).
