Logano wins All-Star race after holding off Sellers

IRWINDALE, Calif. -- Joey Logano came to California looking for a way to cap what was already a remarkable season.

He found it in Victory Lane at Irwindale Speedway, where he led the final 87 laps en route to winning the 'Daytona 500 of short track racing' -- the 2007 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.

"We came here knowing we can win and that's what we did."

"I definitely had a perfect year," Logano said. "This is definitely the cherry on top. I had a great run all night and this was just the perfect way to end it."

Logano had already won in the NASCAR Grand National West Series and the Busch East Series -- before he even turned 17 -- collected six wins in all and wound up as the youngest champion in NASCAR Busch East history.

To get the latest trophy, and perhaps the biggest of his young career, Logano had to hold off a determined Peyton Sellers in three restarts during the final 50 laps. The final came when a caution on Lap 244 necessitated a green-white-checkered finish to the 250-lap event.

The two made contact on the white-flag lap coming out of Turn 4, but Logano kept the No. 20 Chevrolet underneath him and pointed in the right direction.

"It was pretty darn exciting, I'm not going to lie," Logano said. "I was able to clear him every time coming off [Turn] 2. But that last restart he got into the back of me a little bit. You know that's a racing deal. I knew he's a pretty clean racer."

Sellers said in the end he didn't have anything for Logano, but was happy with the finish.

"I tell you, this is a big boost for my team," said Sellers, who turned 24 on Saturday. "Sure would have liked to get that win for my birthday. But, second place is as good a win for this team. We've got a lot of volunteer help on this team and just having a good time doing it.

"To do it on a shoestring budget the entire year and finish third in points and second in the Showdown -- you know, hopefully this will get us a look. That's what we're looking to do is move up the ladder.

Two-time West Series champion Mike Duncan finished third in a frantic finish, edging defending race winner Matt Kobyluck at the start-finish line. Eddie McDonald followed closely in fifth.

Brian Ickler overcame a mid-race mechanical problem that put him a lap down prior to the final 50-lap dash to drive his way back up to sixth. The race was stopped into three segments with breaks at the 100- and 200-lap mark.

Eric Holmes, Mike Olsen, John Salemi, and David Mayhew rounded out the top 10.

Sean Caisse, who knocked Logano off the pole during qualifying Friday, led the first 74 laps. But then the No. 44 Chevrolet was spun into the front stretch wall by a lapped car, knocking him out of the race.

"It's just really disappointing," Caisse said. "We ended up getting jacked up and spun around. Whatever happened happened and we can't change it. ... I'm just more disappointed for the guys."

Duncan led the next 80 laps before giving way to fellow West Series driver Brian Ickler. Ickler gave up the lead to Logano on a Lap 163 restart.

On Lap 186, when Ickler's No. 16 Chevrolet slowed considerably, he was forced to pit and lost a lap. Kobyluck suffered similar misfortune when he cut his right-side tires under caution on Lap 190 and had to make a stop before the final break but he stayed on the lead lap.

Ickler got his lap back as the beneficiary from the Lap 200 break, and he and Kobyluck's No. 40 Chevrolet began to charge through the field. At the same time, though, Logano was driving away from the field. Only a trio of cautions kept him from cruising unchallenged.

"I just had a great race tonight," Logano said. "My crew, they picked it up a ton. To be able to run up front all night, this team is unbelievable. ... I just have a lot of confidence. That's what you have to have to win. We came here knowing we can win and that's what we did."

The Joe Gibbs Racing development driver won six times during the Grand National regular season -- including his first career start in the West Series at Phoenix International Raceway in April. He became the first rookie to win a NASCAR Busch East title.
