BackLap-by-Lap: The Glen (cont'd)

Lap 23 -- The leaders are on their way to pit road.

  • Kurt Busch: Chassis adjustment and four tires.
  • Jimmie Johnson: Loose on the right-handers.
  • Tony Stewart: Car is neutral, four tires, could be running hot.
  • Jeff Gordon wins the race off pit road. Dale Earnhardt Jr. gained four spots, Denny Hamlin lost three.

    Lap 22 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 2: Brian Vickers spins in Turn 10 and has severe sheet-metal damage to his driver's side door but continues around. There's debris on the track, mainly the foam from inside the door area.

    Lap 21 -- Kevin Harvick is tenth but concerned about his brakes. He should be in for service soon.

    Lap 20 -- Here's the top five ...

    1. Tony Stewart
    2. Jeff Gordon
    3. Denny Hamlin
    4. Kyle Busch
    5. Jimmie Johnson

    1.Lap 16 -- Reed Sorenson makes the first green-flag stop.

    Lap 14 -- LEAD CHANGE: Stewart disposes of Gordon in Turn 1 and pulls away.

    Lap 13 -- GREEN FLAG: It's Gordon, followed by Stewart and Hamlin.

    Lap 12 -- Several cars make stops, including Matt Kenseth, who was reporting handling issues. None of the top 12 choose to pit.

    Lap 11 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 1: Ryan Newman and David Ragan both end up in the gravel trap. Newman gets out but Ragan's stuck.

    Lap 7 -- Tony Stewart gets around Hamlin for second, but he trails Gordon by more than 2 seconds, who is checking out on the field. Sixth place is already 12 seconds behind.

    Lap 6-- Dale Earnhardt Jr. is up five spots to ninth. Carl Edwards, on the other hand, has dropped from sixth to 11th.

    Lap 2 -- Matt Kenseth gets around Gordon in Turn 1 but Jeff returns the favor on the back straight and Kenseth drops all the way back to fourth.

    Lap 1 -- GREEN FLAG: Jeff Gordon and Denny Hamlin lead the field to the line and here we go.

    2:15 p.m. ET -- Juan Montoya stops on the track to reset his steering wheel but gets back in line. "There's something different. The steering wheel's way off to the right."

    2:14 p.m. ET -- There's the command to start engines.

    1 p.m. ET -- ESPN's pre-race coverage is on the air.
