Two words have been synonymous with Nashville Superspeedway the last three Nationwide Series seasons -- Carl Edwards.
The 29-year-old defending series champion has flat out owned the 1.33-mile concrete track in "Music City, USA" with a fourth, a fifth and three consecutive wins. Nashville is the only track Edwards has won more than one race in the series, and Nashville and New Hampshire are the only tracks he has finished in the top five in every Nationwide event he has run there.
| Races | Wins | Top-fives | Top-10s | Poles | Avg. Start | Avg. Finish | Laps Led |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 3 | 5 | 5 | 0 | 8.0 | 2.4 | 247 |
As Edwards looks for his fourth consecutive Nashville win Saturday in the Pepsi 300 (2 p.m. ET, ESPN), he could join a very exclusive list. Five times in the history of the Nationwide Series has a driver won four consecutive races at a track, two of those drivers have done it five times.
| Driver | Track | Year(s) | Consecutive Wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dale Earnhardt | Daytona International Speedway | 1990-94 | 5 |
| Jack Ingram | South Boston Speedway | 1985-86 | 5 |
| Tommy Ellis | South Boston Speedway | 1983 | 4 |
| Mark Martin | North Carolina Speedway | 1996-97 | 4 |
| Jamie McMurray | North Carolina Speedway | 2002-04 | 4 |
"We are headed to Nashville this week and it's going to be an exciting race. I love racing there," Edwards said. "We've won the last three races there and we are looking for a fourth.
"Nashville's a unique track, because it's concrete, super fast and you can race all over the track. You have to get the setup right, but the track is a blast. This will be a slow pace weekend with the Sprint Cup Series being off, but our determination will be the same. Our goal is to win another guitar. The guitar is such an awesome trophy."
Before Edwards can claim that guitar, he's going to have to contend with another Cup Series star running full time in the Nationwide Series -- Clint Bowyer.
Edwards has impressive numbers at Nashville, but Bowyer can match just about all of them.
| Races | Wins | Top-fives | Top-10s | Poles | Avg. Start | Avg. Finish | Laps Led |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 1 | 7 | 7 | 0 | 5.6 | 2.7 | 390 |
Nashville will always hold a special place in the heart of Bowyer. He made his first ARCA RE/MAX Series start at the track back in 2003, finishing second. Lucky for him, Richard Childress just happened to be watching and was so impressed with Bowyer, he signed him to the team in November that same year.
"It's been a good racetrack for us and for me in particular," Bowyer said. "Nashville is kind of the reason why I got my job at RCR so it has been a special place for me since all of this started."
Even though Edwards has won the last three Nationwide races at Nashville, Bowyer has actually been the more dominant driver.
| Bowyer | Edwards | |
|---|---|---|
| Driver Rating | 130.2 | 125.6 |
| Laps led | 286 | 247 |
| Laps in Top 15 | 1083 | 1072 |
| Average running position | 3.9 | 5.1 |
| Fastest laps run | 153 | 210 |
| Average start | 3.0 | 8.0 |
| Average finish | 2.4 | 2.4 |
| Quality passes | 76 | 98 |
"For whatever reason, Nashville just fits my driving style," Bowyer said. "I've always been fortunate enough to have good equipment and run well. It was neat to win there [in 2005] and very gratifying to be able to pull into Victory Lane."
