At Texas, he led 126 of the 200 laps run and won by 1.04 seconds; at Phoenix it was 133 laps led but a much closer finish, with a win in front of Carl Edwards by .241 seconds. Then last weekend at Mexico, he led 22 of 80 laps and crossed the finish line .737 seconds ahead of Marcos Ambrose.
Kyle Busch has flat out destroyed the rest of the competition in the Nationwide Series the last three races and Saturday in the Aaron's 312 at Talladega Superspeedway (2:30 p.m. ET, ABC), Busch could accomplish something only one driver has in the series' 26-year history.
Busch has already joined an exclusive list -- winners of three consecutive races in the Nationwide Series.
| Year | Driver | First Win | Second Win | Third Win |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1984 | Sam Ard | Langley | Milwaukee | Dover |
| 1987 | Larry Pearson | Orange County | Bristol | Georgia Intl. |
| 1991 | Harry Gant | Richmond | Dover | Charlotte |
| 1997 | Mark Martin | Rockingham | Richmond | Atlanta |
| 1999 | Dale Earnhardt Jr. | Dover | South Boston | Watkins Glen |
| 2005 | Ryan Newman | Watkins Glen | Michigan | Bristol |
| 2008 | Kyle Busch | Texas | Phoenix | Mexico City |
"Fortunately, in these three races, we've been pretty much mistake-free," Busch said. "The guys on pit road have been awesome and flawless each week. Again, in Mexico, they were great in getting us out and I was able to build up a gap on pit stops even if a caution was thrown. All in all, it's just being smarter, more patient, smooth and having a good car."
There is no denying Busch is having a career year in the Nationwide Series. Along with his three wins, he has two second-place finishes at Daytona and California, and he has started from the pole twice.
But Talladega is a different animal, and Busch has had his ups-and-downs at the 2.66-mile superspeedway. In four Nationwide races at the track, it's been an every-other-year thing for the soon-to-be 23-year-old.
| Year | Start | Finish | Laps | Status | Laps Led |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2004 | 13 | 4 | 117/117 | running | 2 |
| 2005 | 8 | 40 | 16/120 | crash | 0 |
| 2006 | 9 | 3 | 117/117 | running | 25 |
| 2007 | 12 | 39 | 26/120 | crash | 0 |
"We've never really had great luck at Talladega, and I'm hoping we can change that this weekend," Busch said. "It's my worst racetrack as far as catching a break. I was third there one time in a Nationwide Series race and that's about it.
"So far this year, I've been able to change my luck at Atlanta and Texas -- tracks that I've traditionally had trouble at -- so I'm hoping we can turn our luck around at Talladega."
For Busch to do that, he says the key is to stay out of trouble -- something he was unable to last year when he suffered a violent crash 26 laps in (watch video).
"Last year, I took a pretty hard shot there, for sure," Busch said. "That was my first time ever being upside-down and flipping. I wasn't sure what was going to happen. But luckily, I made it through without getting hit by another car and didn't get hurt."
The only thing Busch hopes to put a dent in this week is the record book. And the way he is running, odds are Ard is going to have to move over adn make room for Busch on Saturday afternoon.
"[No. 20 crew chief] Dave Rogers, [No. 18 crew chief] Jason Ratcliff and all the guys on both Joe Gibbs Racing Nationwide Series teams are on top of their game right now and I've been up on top of the wheel," Busch said. "Put those two things together, and it's hard to beat."
