When you look at the entry list for Saturday's final road-course event of the season, the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International (2:30 p.m. ET, ABC), you see successful road-course drivers like Patrick Carpentier, Max Papis, Dario Franchitti, Marcos Ambrose, Robby Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch.
One name that isn't usually mentioned in the same breath with other road-course studs is Kevin Harvick -- and it should be.
Although he doesn't get the credit, Harvick is one of the better road-course drivers in the Nationwide Series, and Watkins Glen is one of his stronger tracks as he comes back this season to defend his win.
| Year | Start | Finish | Status | Laps | Laps Led |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 | 9 | 3 | running | 82/82 | 0 |
| 2001 | 6 | 3 | running | 82/82 | 0 |
| 2006 | 3 | 7 | running | 83/83 | 19 |
| 2007 | 11 | 1 | running | 82/82 | 49 |
Four races, four top-10 finishes for Harvick with an average finish of 3.5. His average finish is second all-time at the track for drivers with at least four races, behind Terry Labonte who owned the 2.45-mile track in the '90s with four wins and an average finish of 2.0.
But it's not just The Glen where Harvick has found road-course success. In fact, Harvick has an average career finish of 2.9 on road courses in the Nationwide Series, tops for Harvick on any type of track.
| Track | Races | Wins | Top-fives | Top-10s | Avg. Start | Avg. Finish | Best Start | Best Finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Watkins Glen | 4 | 1 | 3 | 4 | 7.2 | 3.5 | 3 (2006) | 1 (2007) |
| Mexico City | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 8.5 | 2.5 | 6 (2005) | 2 (2005) |
| Montreal | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 30.0 | 1.0 | 30 (2007) | 1 (2007) |
| Total | 7 | 2 | 6 | 7 | 10.9 | 2.9 |
The numbers speak for themselves: Anytime Harvick has been on a road course, no matter where he qualifies, he challenges for the win and at worse finishes in the top five.
"Winning at Watkins Glen was a major accomplishment in my career. We'd been able to win on all the different types of racetracks as we've gone through the years, but the road course thing, we always had this little cloud over us," Harvick said. "We have been in contention to win and always had things happen here and there. To finally do that was pretty satisfying. It's almost a sense of relief because you get so frustrated at places you know you're capable of winning and haven't."
Ironically, despite Harvick's success on road courses, The Glen will mark his first right-turn race of the season as he didn't compete at Mexico City in April or Montreal last week.
Twenty-six drivers did compete in both races, with 20 of them on the entry list this week.
