Travel Log: Michigan

Villages and a visionary highlight Wolverine State

There's a wide-ranging spectrum of landscapes when traveling from one end of Michigan to the other. Is it rolling hills that a visitor is in search of, or is it scenery of skyscrapers that is in order? A return trip to the state can take one to both.

On the schedule's previous visit to Michigan, the focus was strictly on the Irish Hills area of Brooklyn and did expand into neighboring Detroit -- two opposites, for sure.

This time the list of stops encompasses all of Michigan. From lighthouses and lakes to the standard parks and museums, the intention was to provide a highlight from at least each region of the state. Considering the history and character Michigan has, it's difficult not to get overloaded on the walk-back-in-time villages and the vision of one man's desire for better transportation.

Editor's Pick

Henry Ford Museum -- Sit where Rosa Parks sat. Relive the excitement of Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt at Le Mans. Stand beside the limousine that carried John F. Kennedy on his final ride. It's all under the roof of the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. Tickets are $14 for adults and the facility is open every day.

NASCAR_Renee -- Been here all my life and the best place I have found with serenity and comfort is the Upper Peninsula. It's a really long drive to get there, but the scenery is breathtaking and the waterfalls are beautiful.

historymom -- In between the races, Lansing is a good bet. It is about a 40- to 60-minute drive depending on what route you take. It is the state capitol and there is great shopping and MSU is there. I just left Battle Creek for SC. Binder Park Zoo is in Battle Creek. It is one of the best zoos in the area. Another 20 miles down I-94 to the west is Kalamazoo; they have the Air Zoo.

nicks99 -- Have lived here many years. Love MIS, but to find things to do head for Ann Arbor or the other directions and head for Battle Creek for shopping. Or come do some fishing at the Great Lakes for some great times.
