The Tennessee-Virginia state line cuts between Bristol's city limits.

Travel Log: Bristol

Outdoors, historic sites and ... Dolly Parton

Bristol is back on the schedule this week, and in this season's tour with the Sprint Cup Series, the first visit has included a highlight of the track's host city. The second trip has focused on the attractions around the entire state.

Problem is, it's 506 miles from Memphis to Bristol, or almost eight hours.

The state is broken into three distinct regions: West, Middle and East. So as the series turns back to the mountains of East Tennessee, this edition of Travel Log will focus solely on that region.

With good eats, historic small-town life and enough outdoor activities to book for a month -- including the nation's largest underground lake -- East Tennessee is difficult to capture in one weekend. But it does have Dolly!

Editor's Pick

The Lost Sea -- Tennessee is packed full of parks, museums and unique outdoor adventures. But none rival the Lost Sea. Buried beneath the earth's surface in Sweetwater, Tenn., this 18th century village is one of a kind for this region. It was discovered in 1905 by a 13-year-old boy, and has been used by Cherokee as a meeting place and by Confederate soldiers as a mining place for saltpeter.
