The last six Nationwide races at Richmond International Raceway have belonged to Richard Childress Racing. Sure, it was Denny Hamlin in Victory Lane earlier this spring and Kyle Busch won here last fall, but the four races before that belonged to RCR -- and three of those were won by Kevin Harvick, when he won three in a row in 2005-2006.
But Harvick isn't with RCR anymore -- at least not in the Nationwide Series. Harvick will race in his fourth consecutive Chase for RCR in the cup Series, but this season, whenever Harvick runs a Nationwide race, he is doing it for himself, trying to build up his Kevin Harvick Inc. Nationwide team.
When the green flies in the Emerson Radio 250 on Friday night (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2), he hopes to use his expertise at the .75-mile track and turn it into his company's fourth Nationwide Series victory, and first since Bobby Labonte took the checkered flag at Talladega in 2007.
| Races | Wins | Top-fives | Top-10s | Poles | Avg. Start | Avg. Finish | Laps Led | DNFs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 4 | 10 | 11 | 1 | 8.7 | 7.5 | 595 | 0 |
Harvick's four wins is second all time at RIR, behind Mark Martin who has five. He's third all-time in top-fives, fourth all-time in laps led and his average finish is third best among drivers with at least five starts at the track.
Unfortunately for Harvick, all four of those wins came with Richard Childress Racing, not Kevin Harvick Inc. In fact, while the team has seen Labonte and Tony Stewart take a KHI car to Victory Lane, Harvick has yet to win in his own car.
That's not to say he hasn't been close -- because if you ask Harvick, he's been close too many times -- and that includes earlier this season at Richmond.
"We had a good car here in the spring and I came really close to getting my first Nationwide win in a KHI car," Harvick said. "We were just in a tough position being the leader there at the end when that caution came out. If we didn't pit everybody else was going to come get tires and if we pitted everybody was going to stay out.
"It wasn't the finish we wanted, but I think we have proven since then that we can run up front and be in contention to win races."
Unfortunately for Harvick, history isn't on his side. KHI has been less than impressive in its three-plus years racing at Richmond in the Nationwide Series.
Take out Harvick's impressive second-place run this past spring, in 11 races the organization has just one top-five, three DNFs and six finishes outside the top 20.
