Earlier this season, it appeared Joe Gibbs Racing would win each week in the Nationwide Series. There was a stretch when the team won six consecutive races, and through the first 16 races, JGR visited Victory Lane 10 times.
Since then, things have cooled off -- a little bit.
Joe Gibbs Racing has still won five of the last 12 races, but recently we've seen guys like Ron Fellows, Marcos Ambrose, Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski visit Victory Lane while Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart have hit a bit of a cold stretch -- at least by their standards.
Well, JGR could get shut out Saturday in the Camping World RV Sales 200 at Dover International Speedway (3 p.m. ET, ESPN2) although it will probably be by one of its own. Denny Hamlin has been perfect at the Monster Mile in the last three races, but he's running the No. 32 Toyota for Braun Racing, not the No. 18 or No. 20 for JGR.
And in using the term "perfect," it's nearly accurate.
| Year | Start | Finish | Laps | Laps Led | Driver Rating | Avg. Running Pos. | Laps in Top 15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2007-S | 1 | 2 | 200/200 | 50 | 125.8 | 2.06 | 100% |
| 2007-F | 4 | 1 | 200/200 | 138 | 150.0 | 1.650 | 100% |
| 2008-S | 2 | 1 | 200/200 | 131 | 148.4 | 1.37 | 100% |
In the last three races, Hamlin has spent every lap in the top 15, averages running in the top two and has led more than half the laps run in two of the three races. Hamlin is clearly the man to beat this weekend.
"I always look forward to going back to Dover. It's a challenging racetrack but one I have had a good amount of success at, especially in the Nationwide cars," Hamlin said. "It just seems to suit my driving style. I'd love nothing more than to make it three in a row this weekend and get the Braun Racing guys back to Victory Lane."
This will be Hamlin's eighth race in the No. 32 Braun Racing Toyota this season, and in that car it's been feast or famine. While his three wins this season have come with Joe Gibbs Racing, he's been racy for Braun, just not as consistent as he might like.
| Track | Start | Finish | Laps | Laps Led | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daytona | 8 | 8 | 120/120 | 1 | running |
| Nashville | 21 | 7 | 225/225 | 0 | running |
| Talladega | 10 | 37 | 47/117 | 0 | engine |
| New Hampshire | 17 | 2 | 200/200 | 0 | running |
| Chicago | 41 | 2 | 200/200 | 0 | running |
| Watkins Glen | 4 | 34 | 59/82 | 0 | ignition |
| Bristol | 26 | 36 | 219/250 | 0 | crash |
Hamlin has two top-fives, four top-10s and three DNFs, including the last two races he's raced for the single-car team. Still, what he did earlier this season at Dover for Joe Gibbs Racing should give owner Todd Braun all the confidence in the world he could have a date with Victory Lane for the second time this season (Kyle Busch at Lowe's).
| Start | Finish | High | Low | Avg. | Fastest Laps | Laps in Top 15 | Laps Led |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 27.4% (1st) | 100% (1st) | 65.5% (1st) |
"[Dover] is a place where track position is really important because of how difficult it can be to pass," Hamlin said. "If you can get a good starting position you've won part of the battle."
