The No. 20 leads the owner standings but the No. 2 is closing fast.

Another close battle for the owner's championship

With the Nationwide Series' driver title decisively in Clint Bowyer's favor thanks to a 196-point lead on Carl Edwards with five races to go, the focus once again is on the owner's championship where the action is much closer.

Twice in the 26-year history of the Nationwide Series has an owner won the owner's championship while a driver not in his camp won the points championship -- and in both instances it was Richard Childress.

In 2003, Brian Vickers won the driver's title for Hendrick Motorsports while Childress took the owner's title and in 2007, Edwards won the points championship and Childress was the victor of another owner's title. The opposite could happen to Childress this season.

Heading into the Friday's Dollar General 300 at Lowe's Motor Speedway (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2), the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota has a slim 33-point lead on the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. The No. 20, with drivers Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart and most recently Joey Logano have dominated all season long, but Bowyer has been consistent which has allowed his No. 2 to hang with the foursome at JGR.

No. 20 9 5 8 1 3 4
No. 2 1 10 14 0 2 3

Logano will once again be in the No. 20 for Joe Gibbs Racing and this will be his first look at the 1.5-mile track in Concord, N.C. For Bowyer, it took a few races for him to figure out the tri-oval, but lately he has shown he has a pretty good handle on the track and is close to winning his first Lowe's race.

2007-F 16 8 running 200/200 10
2008-S 15 6 running 202/202 0

Bowyer has an average finish of 16.9 but that is because of his early issues at the track. His average finish the past four races is 6.0 and his 608 points earned in those races is second only to Busch.

If Bowyer is able to lead Childress to the owner's championship, it would be record setting. Six owners have won multiple championships in the Nationwide Series and Childress tops that list -- but with some company.

The final fact

157Amount of points Clint Bowyer has made up on the No. 20 team in the owner standings since Joey Logano has taken over as driver of the 20 car. The 20 team had a 190-point lead after Chicagoland, the final race before Logano was put in the car for the rest of the season.
