Greg Biffle held off Kyle Busch for 95 laps but a blown engine brought the evening to an early end.

Biffle's frustration comes out after 43rd at Darlington

Loose tires, blown engine ruin night that looked promising

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Greg Biffle sounded like a man who had a victory stolen from him Saturday night.

While Kyle Busch was clicking off laps on his way to the win in the Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington Raceway, Biffle was lamenting the bad luck that seems to be hanging around the No. 16 Ford team this season.

"It is really frustrating, but, you know what, I've just come accustomed to expecting it because it's just week after week it's something," he said. "Something breaks. Something falls off."

After dominating his way to Darlington victories in 2005 and 2006 -- and capturing the pole for this race -- Biffle appeared to have one of the best cars Saturday night. He jumped in front on Lap 40 when Busch was slowed by lapped traffic and proceeded to lead seven times for 95 laps (watch video).

But his night began to unravel when he slowed on Lap 193 and headed for the pits with a vibration. Despite the unscheduled stop, when the rest of the field headed in for service, Biffle regained the lead. But he was forced to stop again 40 laps later, this time with a combination of issues, including a malfunctioning engine (watch video).

As he climbed from the car with his first DNF of the season and a 43rd-place effort, Biffle seemed somewhat resigned to his fate.

It is really frustrating, but, you know what, I've just come accustomed to expecting it because it's just week after week it's something.

"It's just real frustrating," he said. "I give it 110 percent as a driver all the time and you just want your equipment to last and be able to win these races. They're so hard to win these days. You can deal with a flat tire or something like that, but when it's self-induced it makes it even harder. It makes it so hard to swallow when it's self-induced like that."

Biffle tried his best not to blame his crew.

"We had wheels loose twice tonight," Biffle said. "I know everybody is trying their hardest. The guys are digging their hearts out, but the fact of the matter is in this sport -- in this day and age -- you cannot leave the wheels loose -- not at a place this fast. Somebody is gonna get hurt."

In Biffle's opinion, Saturday night was just more of the same for a team that seems snake-bit. The results -- three consecutive top-five finishes and five top-10s this season -- have perhaps masked some underlying issues that have plagued him so far in 2008.

"Multiple things have happened per race and, lucky enough, we've been able to slip through there by the skin of our teeth," Biffle said. "At Texas, we weren't able to, and tonight, we just weren't able to. I'm not sure what happened, but I'm sure the guys will get back and look at it.

"The engine shop, they build great engines. They build lots of power. Obviously, the car was really fast tonight, but we just don't know what happened. We'll have to get back and see what happened."
