CONCORD, N.C. -- The very definition of a burnout is an unscripted show of emotion after an exciting win on the racetrack. So anticipation was high at Lowe's Motor Speedway Saturday night for the first Pennzoil Platinum Challenge as Clint Bowyer, Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch smoked their tires for the chance to be named "king of the burnout."

Biffle was declared the winner, and for his efforts won $10,000 for the Greg Biffle Foundation. But from the reaction of the crowd -- the true winner was the fans.

I think Kyle [Busch] and I were the only ones to follow the rules but my time was faster and I think I had a bit more smoke.

The rules for the event were simple. Start in one set of cones and keep those tires spinning until the start/finish line. Once there, do at least two donuts and then keep the tires smokin' and try to park the car inside another set of cones. The fastest driver, minus any penalties, is named the winner.

Well, rules were meant to be broken because the fans got much more than the required amount of smoke and rubber.

Johnson and Harvick were the highlight of the event, with both pushing the rulebook aside and choosing to be crowd-pleasers instead.

Johnson started his donuts immediately, almost hitting the outside wall on his first spin. More than six spins later, he went to the second set of cones and did some more donuts, taking out a few pylons and throwing away any chance of a victory (watch video). That didn't matter to Johnson though, as the crowd loved the show -- including the fact he blew out both rear tires in the process.

"I wasn't worried about the technical aspect of it," said Johnson, who unofficially clocked a time of 69.017 seconds that included a total of 20 seconds worth of penalties. "I just wanted to have fun."

Harvick had the unenviable task of following Johnson, but he didn't disappoint. His donuts produced a ton of smoke and to top if off, he parked the front of his Petty Driving Experience vehicle against the outside wall and smoked the tires, showering the track with rubber pellets and filling the grandstands with more smoke. His time: 31.916 seconds.

Bowyer led off the event and pretty much followed the guidelines, taking time to do more donuts than the required two. The crowd loved it, but the stopwatch didn't as his time of 28.971 seconds was good enough for second place.

Following Bowyer was Biffle, who was the first driver to do what was expected, including parking the car inside the second set of cones (watch video). His burnout wasn't the most exciting one on the night, but it was the most effective: 25.406 seconds.

"Rules are rules, they're there for a reason and you have to follow them," Biffle said. "[Johnson] definitely put on a show for the fans but he knocked some cones down."

Busch was the last of the five drivers to hit the track, and to the surprise of no one was showered with boos before he started. Like Biffle, Busch also followed the rules, delivering the longest burnout of the event and perfectly placing his car in the second set of cones.

After bringing his car to a stop in 40.554 seconds, Busch saluted the crowd by climbing on top of the car and bowing to fans in the stands, receiving another loud chorus of boos for his efforts.

While the results were not tabbed as official, Johnson was left wondering aloud if there was going to be a ceremony following the event.

There wasn't, and Biffle was quietly declared the winner.

"I think Kyle and I were the only ones to follow the rules but my time was faster and I think I had a bit more smoke," Biffle said. "I think they should do it [again] next year. Kind of change it up and maybe give us a little more room or something, but it was a lot of fun."
