What a weekend to have a tape recorder.
Bristol Motor Speedway always brings out the emotions, and Sunday's Food City 500 was no different. Of course, it wasn't just Sunday, either. After Kyle Busch's crew botched a pit stop for tires in Saturday's Nationwide Series race, the driver let out a big "Y'all suck!" over the radio before climbing from his car and leaving the race track via the pedestrian tunnel.
On Sunday, however, he had cooled off and admitted going over the top. And clearly, he left no doubt as to his goals on the weekend.
"I'm not out there to be No. 1. We all know who No. 1 is and forever will be. To me, I go out there to win races, to be No. 1 on the race track. That's where I feel like I win, where my benefit is. ... For me, I don't think I would enjoy having the most fans out there. I actually like the way I am, the role I portray. And I think that there's probably too much pressure on one guy's shoulders who doesn't seem to win very often. But for us, it's a blast to go out there and do what we do."
-- Kyle Busch, on how fans perceive him
"Well, to be honest with you, it's not that hard to stay positive until you get around the media. I mean you guys have got to take a little responsibility for being so hard on everybody, and some people are going to argue that you all are just calling out to the reality of a situation. But we're trying to work hard and trying to do our job and that's what we do every week, and somebody seems to think we still belong here and so we keep showing up."
-- Dale Earnhardt Jr., on staying positive
"I would've raced him hard. I definitely would. I treat him as if he wasn't a teammate, actually. I wouldn't try to hit him hard enough to send him up to the wall, but I'd definitely try to get him out of the groove. They've had their fair share of wins and it was time for us, but not today."
-- Denny Hamlin, on racing with teammate Kyle Busch
"It just feels great to be up there racing with those guys, passing Jeff Gordon. I mean, he's just a hero of mine. I've just watched him forever and just admired him so much. And, yeah, we're in the middle of it. I'm getting a few bumps here and there and I'm bumping a few guys. It's just a lot of fun."
-- Marcos Ambrose, on racing with the leaders at Bristol
"I wish the Chase was right now because we are in championship form right now. We are very consistent, we are fighting, we are making good adjustments, great pit stops. I was a little disappointed; I really thought we were going to be better than that."
-- Jeff Gordon, on his fourth-place finish
"This track, it's not like the old Bristol. You get guys side-by-side and you have nowhere to go. Guys from behind can catch you real easy. You're in a mess."
-- Kurt Busch, on Bristol and coming from the back to finish 11th
"I would have never thought you'd have engine trouble at Bristol. It never crossed my mind. We were running along and I think we were 11th, but we had a top-10 sewn up, I think, easy, and may have even had a better car than that. It's just so disappointing. They were worried about whether I was gonna be able to make the whole race and the engine failed."
-- Greg Biffle, on overcoming his rib injury but blowing a motor
"Today, we weren't laying over for anybody. We had nothing to lose and everything to gain, so I raced 110 percent every lap."
-- Travis Kvapil, on finishing 18th but having to shut down due to funding
Kyle Busch won the Food City 500, his 14th victory in 155 Sprint Cup Series races. This is his second victory and third top-10 finish in 2009. This is his second victory and sixth top-10 finish in nine races at Bristol Motor Speedway.
The Busch brothers have won three consecutive races. They won four in a row last year -- Kyle at Infineon Raceway, Kurt at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Kyle at Daytona International Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway.
Denny Hamlin (second) posted his fourth top-10 finish in seven races at Bristol. It is his second top-10 finish in 2009.
Jimmie Johnson (third) posted his seventh top-10 finish in 15 races at Bristol.
Scott Speed (28th) was the highest-finishing rookie.
