Ron Hornaday led 113 laps last year, the fifth time the winner at Gateway has led for more than half the race.

Gateway success comes from experienced hand

There's never been a first-time Truck Series winner at Gateway International Raceway and Saturday's Copart 200 (2 p.m. ET, SPEED) isn't likely to crown one.

The 1.25-mile track is that difficult.

Six of the Madison, Ill., facility's previous winners are series champions, including defending winner Ron Hornaday. The six -- Hornaday, Johnny Benson, Greg Biffle, Todd Bodine, Ted Musgrave and Jack Sprague -- own all but three of series' 14 season titles.

Gateway's 10 winners (in the track's first 11 events) boast a combined 159 victories.

The track's degree of difficulty is compounded by a pair of tight turns, 1 and 2, coupled with the more sweeping third and fourth corner.

"That makes it definitely one of the tougher ones -- Daytona being the hardest," said Benson, currently a SPEED TV analyst and the 2007 Gateway winner. "People who win there have an understanding of compromise."

Bodine, the Gateway winner in his 2006 title year, likes the track because there's no one right way around.

"You can make your truck do different things," he said, "but you've got to have everything right -- strategy and pit stops. And the fewer trucks you have to pass, the better off you are."

Cook, who won in 2002, likens a lap at Gateway to laps at two different tracks. "[Turns] 1 and 2 demand patience and finesse while 3 and 4 you barrel around them like there's no tomorrow," he said. "Mentally, you have to approach each one differently."

1Drivers with more than one win at Gateway: Ted Musgrave (2001, '05). Musgrave shares the track lead with five top-fives and seven top-10s.
1 Laps led by David Starr in nine starts. He led the last lap in 2002.
2Times a manufacturer has won consecutive races: Todd Bodine (2006) and Johnny Benson ('07) in a Toyota. Ron Hornaday won last year in a Chevrolet, which leads all manufacturers with four wins at Gateway.
4Loop Data statistics that Ron Hornaday leads at Gateway: Driver Rating (116.1), Average Running Position (6.6), Fastest Laps Run (73) and Laps Led (207).
4Top-10s for Todd Bodine in as many starts. After winning at Gateway in 2006, he has finished fourth in each of the past two years. His average finish? You guessed it: 4.0.
6Consecutive lead-lap finishes for Matt Crafton, the longest current streak. Crafton has five top-10s in eight starts at Gateway, but has never had a top-five nor has he led a lap there.
7Top-10s for Dennis Setzer and Rick Crawford, most in track history among active drivers. Each driver has made all 11 starts at Gateway, each has four top-fives (also tops among active drivers), but neither has won there.
10Place of finish for Aric Almirola in his only start at Gateway in 2006. He is entered in Billy Ballew Motorsports' No. 51 Toyota this week.
14Starting position for David Starr in his victory in 2004, the only time a winner has not started inside the top 10. In fact, nine of the 11 races have been won from the top five, including two from the pole (Ted Musgrave both times).
19.0Average finish for Mike Skinner in six starts at Gateway. He finished seventh last year, just his second top-10 (fourth in 2005). Three times he has finished 28th or worse.
