FONTANA, Calif. -- Yates Racing and David Gilliland announced Friday that they are terminating their relationship due to a lack of sponsorship on Yates Racing's No. 38 Sprint Cup car.

Gilliland began driving the No. 38 car for Robert Yates Racing in mid-2006.

"David did a great job for us and is a gifted driver," said team owner Doug Yates "We are sorry to lose him but it is important for David to continue driving, and sponsorship is very tough this year."

"The folks at Yates Racing treated me very fairly and I appreciate that" Gilliland said. "Yates is a great organization and I am sorry to leave. But I need to move on and pursue other opportunities for my Sprint Cup career."

In 86 Cup starts for Yates, Gilliland had two top-fives and four top-10s while also earning two pole positions.
